The Day of Sabbaths
in the New Testament
- as clearly revealed by the Syriac
Peshitta –
over and above that which I’ve
been previously able to discern from the Greek Textus Receptus…
Please notice in particular item #9 below and its footnote!
Upon
doing a search in the Syriac Peshitta for the Aramaic words “@ZAYC @NEI,” meaning “Day of Sabbaths,” I
found 9 NT passages and 10 hits, as follows:

[1] This translation is based upon the Syriac Peshitta alone. Considering the fact that Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew is not using the plural and the genitive formats that are apparently being reflected within the Syriac word “@ZAYC,” “of Sabbaths,” I no longer find support for translating Matt 12:11 in term of the Day of Sabbaths.
[2] Albeit being convinced that the Syriac Peshitta is misrepresenting the original Hebrew text of Matt 12:11, I’ll retain the remainder of this footnote as a memo of my former thinking re this passage (which thinking and footnote is otherwise of no lasting value!:)
Notice that although Yeshua is not being asked specifically re the Day of Sabbaths [cf. verse 10; per the Jews reckoning the 8th, 15th, etc. days of reckoning towards Pentecost began on Thursdays that year (18 CE) and had no connection with the Sabbaths,] nevertheless his answer to those that ask him is made in terms of the Day(s) of Sabbaths, thus indicating Yeshua’s emphasis upon Scriptural reckoning of the Days of Omer (in contradistinction to the reckoning of “the Jews.”) Considering my findings re the timing of this event, the 2nd or 3rd Sabbath [out of 8] towards Pentecost, this reference of his should not be surprising, nor is it anachronistic.
[3] This translation is based upon Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew, which Hebrew text I am convinced is a transcript, not a translation, of the original Hebrew text.
[4] Notice that KJV is using the singular case, just as is also Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew. This seems to be an accidental correction in comparison to the Greek Textus Receptus version, which Greek version has retained the plural format of the Syriac Peshitta which is not present in the original Hebrew text, as evidenced by Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew. However, the Greek text has dropped the word “day” as found not only in KJV, but also in the Syriac Peshitta! Cf. also Luke 4:16 below!
[5] Cf. this link!
[6] Notice carefully!: The ruler of the synagogue is reacting because of this day being a Seventh-day Shabbat, and because it is the Day of Sabbaths! To Yeshua and to the Scriptural calendar the Day of Sabbaths always coincides with the Seventh-day Sabbath. Not so to today’s Jews, to them it may fall only on Day One, Day Two, Day Four, or Day Six, not on Day Three, Day Five, or Sabbath! Indeed, this particular year, 18 CE, it would have fallen on the Sixth Day of the week, if, at that time, the Jews would have been using current Rabbinical rules, which however they did not! If they would have, one would have been justified in concluding that Yeshua healed this woman during that hour or so between the beginning of a new day and before the conclusion of the prior day. That is, after sunset [Friday night,] but before the time when three stars were visible on the evening sky. However, as it is, that is not a valid conclusion!
[7] Cf. this link!
[8] Notice that in Luke 13:14, 16 KJV is perfectly reflecting the Greek Textus Receptus version, which Greek in this instance is using the singular and thus missing the understanding of this passage being a reference to the Day of Sabbaths, that is, Pentecost! Cf. Luke 4:16 above!
[9] Cf. footnote #6!
[10] Cf. this link!
[11] Notice that here KJV is adding the definite article whereas a literal translation from the Greek Textus Receptus would be “a Sabbath.” However, the Aramaic text could be read either way. Nevertheless, both KJV and Textus Receptus are here losing the reference to the Day of Sabbath that is inherent in the Aramaic text!
[12] Cf. Luke 13:14, 16 above and the corresponding footnotes!
[13] Per John 7:2 Yeshua spoke these words at the feast of Tabernacles, apparently while giving reference to a past event at an earlier Pentecost Sabbath. I find no indication that the reference would be to anyone having been healed in immediate conjunction with the timing of those words of Yeshua.
Further, I find it interesting that the word “taber*” is found only once in KJV of each of the four gospels, and that in the Syriac Peshitta the Aramaic word “@LHNC,” translated ‘tabernacles’ is found only once in the entire NT. However, Matthew 17:4, Mark 9:5, and Luke 9:33 all use “OILHN” (found three times in the NT,) and the Hebrew “@LH” meaning “cover(ing)” (Strong’s H2921-2922) are all closely related.
[14] An important thing to consider here is this: What particular man is Yeshua here giving reference to? Is this a reference to either 1) the man with a withered hand, or 2) to one or both of the events recorded in Luke 13:11-21 and 14:1-6? Or else, 3) is this a reference to an event not specifically recorded in the Scriptures? It seems to me as though item #3 would be the easy cop out option, while item #1 doesn’t quite seem to fit Yeshua’s words “made a man every whit whole.” Furthermore, item #1 is an event that took place well over one year prior to this event, perhaps more than two years (if my present scenario [present scenario: ”5941[(?)] 09 15 2027 [2010-12-22]”; cf. this link] is in error on that point?) But if this is a reference to item #2 above, then my present scenario is in error, because I’ve presently placed the events of item #2 at the Pentecost following this event, that is, in the summer of 18 CE. If true, then either one or the other of these events would have to be corrected in my scenario. [Well, this discovery was the beginning of this revised scenario as improved upon this.]
[15] Cf. Luke 14:1 and the corresponding KJV footnote!
[16] From the Hebrew “רב” meaning “increase, abundant” as in the embryo of a grain or seed (cf. Strong’s H7227, H7231! That is, the 1st of 50 days towards Pentecost, the Day of Sabbaths!)
Notice that the same word “רב” may also be thought of in terms of “ר,” ‘the head,’ of “ב,” the “house-hold,” thus also the Hebrew word ‘Rabbi.’ Cf. these pictograms of the ancient Hebrew Alphabet!
Thus, once again, the beginning, the head, of the counting towards the Day of Sabbaths, the 50th Day, Pentecost is this very day (John 19:31; per KJV: “an high day,”) that Seventh-day Sabbath which is always found as one among the seven days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
How does this day relate to the out pouring of the Holy Spirit and the Latter Day Rain?
What does this inspired Writer have to share re this particular day and Yeshua Messiah / Jesus Christ, the First Fruits?
[17] As best I can tell the KJV is doing a fairly good job of making sense out of the Greek TR text. Yet, both seem to be missing the point of this being a reference to the Day of Sabbaths, to Pentecost.
[18] Cf. this link!
[19] Cf. Luke 4:16!
