Strong evidence of an original Hebrew NT manuscript

Abstract:

From the discussion below it may be noted that:

1.     In KJV, as well as in all other translation that I am aware of, most time references (found in the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts) to the named and numbered weekdays are being obscured to the extent that even the most avid students of the NT testament have never noticed and understood these very specific time references correctly. The same is true for most of the NT references to the biblical feast days.

2.     The disciples of Yeshua during the first century were indeed observing all of the biblical Feast Days, albeit not by making an emphasis upon the ritual of sacrificial killing of animals. Instead they were focusing upon the lessons inherent in each of the symbols associated with those feast days and holy convocations. May I suggest that there are many blessings inherent in reviving this practice of the first century disciples?

3.     Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 28:1 is evidence, perhaps even proof, that Matthew was originally written in Hebrew and that Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew is not a translation from the Greek. In fact, confirmation for this is provided also by Papias (60-130 CE – conventional dating.) Papias reports: “Matthew collected the oracles [literally: “words”] in the Hebrew language, and each interpreted them as best he could.” (The Hebrew Yeshua vs. the Greek Jesus, by Nehemia Gordon, p. 76, (2006.) )  Additional linguistic proof is published in The Hebrew Yeshua vs. the Greek Jesus, by Nehemia Gordon, pp. 33-36 and pp. 75-77, (2006.)

4.     Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 28:1 may be evidence that the event there described occurred in the evening, not at dawn.

Discussion:

Re each of the Days of the week and the Eighth Day in NT:

The weekday names Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are never used in KJV. Neither is the KJV translator making clear to the reader that any passages in the NT are naming any specific weekdays besides Sabbath. Yet, each of the weekdays is specifically referenced in the Greek text (cf. study below!:) The First Day is named twice; the Second Day 3-5 times; the Third Day up to 18 times; the Fourth Day once or twice; the Fifth Day twice; the Sixth Day thrice; the Seventh Day is so named six or seven times, i.e. in addition to the name Sabbath; and the Eighth Day is named four times [Once in reference to the Feast Day so named (Luke 9:28,) once in reference to the day following the Seventh Day of Unleavened Bread (John 20:26,) and twice in reference to the circumcision of Yeshua (Luke 2:21 and Phil. 3:5.)]

“The First Day of the week?” OR “the 7th Day of Unleavened Bread!”

The Greek word for Shabbat (i.e. Strong’s G4521) is found in the NT 68 times. Yet, the English word ‘Sabbath’ is found only 60 times in KJV, while the words ‘Sabbaths,’ ‘Shabbat,’ and ‘Shabbats’ are not found in the KJV at all. So what about the remaining eight (8) Greek occurrences of the Greek word for Shabbat? It turns out the remaining eight instances are in fact mistranslated “the First Day of the week.” (For a detailed discussion of each of these eight passages please click this link!)

Greek GNT-TR Matthew 28:1: “οψε δε σαββατων τη επιφωσκουση εις μιαν σαββατων”

“And on the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at twilight…”

(A TLT© translation from the above Greek in the light of the corresponding Hebrew original text as represented by Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew.)

Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 28:1: “וביום הראשון מהשבוע בהשכמה”

“And on the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at twilight…”

(TLT© translation from Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 28:1.)

Once the original Hebrew text of Matthew 28:1 is recognized as being the basis for the extant Greek versions of Matthew, and not the other way around, one can better understand and more correctly translate said texts into the English language.  It should be noted that the Hebrew text above is obviously not a translation based upon the extant Greek text!

Strong’s G3796: ὀψέ From the same as G3694 (through the idea of backwardness); (adverbially) late in the day.

Strong’s G3694: ὄπίσω From the same as G3693 with enclitic of direction; to the back, that is, aback (as adverb or preposition of time or place; or as noun)

Strong’s G3693: ὄπισθεν From ὄπις opis (regard; from G3700) with enclitic of source; from the rear (as a secure aspect), that is, at the back (adverb and preposition of place or time)

Strong’s H7925:שׁכם  A primitive root; properly to incline (the shoulder to a burden); but used only as denominative from H7926; literally to load up (on the back of man or beast), that is, to start early in the morning.

Strong’s H7926: שׁכם From H7925; the neck (between the shoulders) as the place of burdens; figuratively the spur of a hill.

In fact, based upon Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew one should probably seriously consider whether the word “בהשכמה” isn’t in fact a reference to the beginning of the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, i.e. sometimes in the evening. Notice that the Hebrew text has no reference at all to dawn, light, morning, etc., only to something that primarily means “the neck (between the shoulders)” as in something being near the head, i.e. near the beginning. Only by extension, “…as a place of burdens” is it being interpreted to give reference to the time “to load up (on the back of man or beast.)” That this Hebrew word is primarily a word giving reference to beginnings is also supported by the Hebrew letters from which the word is construed: Shem meaning tooth, an identifier. Koph meaning steady hand or cause. Mem meaning water. Or taken all together: “Identifying the source of the stream of time; a spring, a beginning.” [My own interpretation.]

Having accessible the Hebrew original texts to all the NT books would certainly be most helpful for resolving these issues, wouldn’t it?!

Said eight KJV mistranslations (based upon the Greek) are said to be based upon the [false] assumption that the Greek word σαββατων is giving reference to the word “week.” The reason for this is that the week has seven days and that the Greek word for Sabbath is closely related to the Greek word for seven. Instead each of those eight NT passages is in fact giving reference to the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

The Feast of Unleavened bread is referenced also in Matt. 26:17; Mark 14:1, 12; Luke 22:1, 7; and in Acts 12:3; 20:6.

[Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 26:17: וביום הראשון של חג המצות ]

On the different Hebrew names for the First vs. the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread:

Accordingly, upon comparing the above quoted texts from Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew we may learn something about the Hebrew terminology used for designating those particular days within the Feast of Unleavened Bread, i.e.:

1.     Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 26:17: יום הראשון של חג המצות , (the First Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.)

2.     Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 28:1: יום הראשון מהשבוע, (the Foremost Day of the Seven, i.e. the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread).

Unfortunately, having access to only one each of those last mentioned Hebrew expressions within New Testaments, i.e. within Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew, is not a very solid basis in and of itself. Unless and until these usages are being confirmed either upon Old Testament Hebrew, or upon additional original Hebrew New Testament manuscripts, this will remain an educated guess.

This box contains an obsolete [dated: “5928± 06 19 2023 [2007-9-21]” TLT translation; obsoleted upon my discovery [during the winter 5929±/2025 [2008/2009] ] that Babylon fell on Tammuz 16, 534 BCE and not as commonly believed on Tishri 16, 539 BCE,] which translation however does have some UNIQUE features that may potentially be of some interest in that it not only correlates the day of the week with the day of the month [i.e. Aviv 21=3rd day of Omer 1st day of Omer = 7th Day Shabbat = Aviv 19, which likely did happen in 536 BCE thus fitting the conventional but faulty history version,] but also its main focus upon the Count of Omer, i.e. the count from one to fifty, though my TLT translation is assuming that 49 or seven sevens points to the same thing (more below!:)

But, let’s not be remiss by leaving it at that! Interestingly enough, I find in the entire Old Testament only one passage using a word related to “מהשבוע” combined with a word designating a number. That passage is Daniel 10:2-3. Although translated in KJV as three weeks, I believe, considering the exact Hebrew grammar as well as the particulars of biblical instructions and associated traditions re the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread; a more correct translation of said passage is as follows:

Dan 10:2 TLT+-obsolete! In those1992 days3117 I589 Daniel1840 was1961 mourning56 upon the third7969 day3117 of the count of seven sevens towards Pentecost.7620

Compare KJV:

Dan 10:3  KJV+ I ate398 no3808 pleasant2530 bread,3899 neither3808 came935 flesh1320 nor wine3196 in413 my mouth,6310 neither3808 did I anoint myself at all,5480, 5480 till5704 three7969 whole3117 weeks7620 were fulfilled.4390

Accordingly, this is the one and only example in the entire bible I find in consequence of the command to “count” given in Leviticus 23:15. Given also the usage of the Hebrew word “ראשון” in the OT, which is not, as is the Hebrew word “אחד” (cf. Gen. 1:5,) primarily a number indicating numerical order, but is instead a word used for indicating importance, being best, chief, foremost, beginning, choice, etc., I find these facts from the Old Testament Hebrew being a strong support for not considering the words “יום הראשון” (quoted from Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew above) necessarily as words indicating numerical order, but indicating instead their relative importance: Accordingly, “יום הראשון של חג המצות,” the First Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread is the most important Day for setting the ground rules for making possible the entire journey in time towards the Day of Pentecost and eventually towards the Year of Jubilee. It is a necessary prerequisite to get rid of the emptiness, void, ignorance, misconceptions, false assumptions and presumptions, and outright errors that are being caused by the use of yeast and other destructive eating habits both symbolically and in practical life. Once the prerequisites are satisfied, the final objective, the Day of Pentecost and the Year of Jubilee, becomes the most important emphasis, thus “יום הראשון מהשבוע,” i.e. the most important Day of the count of Sevens, which Day is apparently as we learn from Scriptural usage the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which completes that Feast and sets the stage for the ongoing journey through time and life and towards the freedom that can only be realized outside worldly governments while inside the Kingdom of God.

Well, in the absence of further light from the Old Testament on the use of these terms as used in Shem Tov’s Hebrew, it seems that we are left with the evidence provided by the context of each of the passages in Greek manuscripts using the words ‘μια των σαββατων’ etc. as further discussed within this and other articles of mine, which evidence clearly and unequivocally establishes said Greek phrase as referencing the seventh day of Unleavened Bread.

But, let’s see now! Where are we? What was the actual count towards the Day of Pentecost in that 3rd year of Cyrus? We have discovered that the year was 531 BCE and that the Aviv 24 of Daniel 10:4 was a regular weekly Shabbat [which began at sunset Fri April 28, 531 BCE.] It follows that Aviv 21 [which began at sunset Tue April 25, 521 BCE] was the 4th Day of the week and the 4th day of 49 (or the 5th day of 50) of the count of Omer towards the Feast of Weeks / Pentecost. The Omer sacrifice had been made at dawn of the preceding Shabbat [i.e. at sunrise Sat April 22, 531 BCE] and that Shabbat was the 1st day of 50 and the accession day of the subsequent 49 day count towards the Pentecost Shabbat at the end of the seven weeks.

Thus, Daniel, in full accord with Torah instructions (more re this at this link!,) would have been observing the Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread beginning near the end of the Third Day of the week [before sunset Tue April 25, 521 BCE.] Said Seventh Day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread marked the conclusion of the seven days of fasting, i.e. of eating no leavened bread etc.. Isn’t this exactly what Daniel is saying in Daniel 10? Let’s see what the Hebrew text is really saying:

The word translated “mourning” in KJV is “H56מתאבל.” This word per Strong’s H56 is “אבל.” Looking closely at that word I see first the letter aleph which has many associations with the name Yahweh, which letter is then immediately followed by “בל” which when by itself is the same as Baal (Strong’s H1078) and which means (Strong’s H1167) “a master; hence a husband, or (figuratively) owner.” Obviously there is a considerable difference between the realities corresponding to this word when closely associated with the realm of Yahweh Elohim and when not. Thus I find that a better translation of H56 must be one reflecting obeisance to the Torah instructions and the true Word of our Creator. Accordingly, in this case I find that the word “observing” would be most appropriate. (Additional considerations re these verses are found at this link.) I find the following translation being the one most closely in harmony with both the original Hebrew and with the events as I understand they happened:

Re “the first day of the week” as referenced in 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 (KJV:)

Additionally, it should be thoughtfully noted that when the word unleavened is being used in 1 Corinthians 5:7-8 it is because 1 Corinthians was written shortly before the Feast of Unleavened bread and that this entire epistle of Paul’s is focusing upon themes that has to do with the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

Conclusion re KJV usage of the term “the first day of the week:”

It follows very definitely that none of the above eight New Testament text passages, translated into English as “the first day of the week” are in fact referencing the first day of the week, does it not?

The Feast of Weeks and Pentecost in NT:

Additionally at least three (Luke 4:16; Acts 13:14; and Acts 16:13) of the remaining 60 instances of the word ‘Sabbath’ in the New Testament are in fact giving reference to the Feast of Weeks, which should perhaps accordingly better be named the Feast of Sabbaths, or the Day of Sabbaths as in the Greek, otherwise also known as Pentecost (so named in the Greek three times: Acts 2:1; 20:16; and 1 Cor. 16:8.)  Indeed, upon searching the Syriac Peshitta New Testament for the Aramaic term for “Day of Sabbaths” I find nine (9) NT passages using that term ten (10) times!

Notice also that per Acts 20:16; 21:18, 26-27 the day of Pentecost is clearly identified in the Greek as an event upon the Seventh Day (v. 27) of the week (cf. also the exact and specific dating of each of the consecutive days identified in Paul’s itinerary under items 26-42 at this link)!

The Feast of Tabernacles in NT:

The Feast of Tabernacles is named as such in KJV only once (John 7:2,) yet it is referenced by inference at least thrice more: Matt 17:4; Mark 9:5; Luke 9:33; and Hebrew 11:9. [Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 17:4 (“three tabernacles”): שלש משכנות ]

The Day of At-One-Ment in NT:

The Day of At-One-Ment is not specified as such at all in KJV, yet it is being specifically referenced in the New Testament: Once using the word “atonement” (Rom. 5:11,) eight times by the words ‘reconcile’ or ‘reconciliation’ (Rom. 5:10; 11:15; 1 Cor. 7:11; 2 Cor. 5:18-20,) and at least once by reference to the Tenth Day (Acts 25:6 and Rev. 2:10.)

[1] Noticing the context, which provides that a multitude of people followed him, it does not seem likely that this event took place later than on one of these two Sabbaths.

[2] Given that the exact same Aramaic term, “שבתא אחרתא,” is being used also in Luke 6:6 as in Acts 13:42, 44, I am inclined, based upon the context of each of those three passages, all of which are recording a single event that happened at one particular point in time, to perceive this term as a time reference to the latter portion of Sabbath, that is, the latter light portion of Sabbath which follows the earlier dark portion, i.e. the morning following the eve of the Sabbath. Alternatively, and since both words in said term are written in the singular case while following, in all three cases, the preposition “-L,” I would consider said term as pointing to “the ensuing Sabbath hours on the following morning.” Yet another outside possibility is that which is being suggested by Earnest L. Martin, “the between Sabbath,”or “the Betwixt Shabbat,” that is, as a special reference to the 24 courses of priests and Levites servicing the Temple (cf. this link, and also my discussion of said temple services under “I. The timing of John the Baptist’s conception and delivery.”)
