Why Two Different ‘Yom Rishon’ in the
Feast of Unleavened Bread?
A Scripture Word Study
Re Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 26:17 vs
28:1
What is the True Meaning of the Hebrew
Word ‘Rishon?’
What are the corresponding words in Aramaic and Greek?
Abstract:
Based upon my findings
in this article, it becomes obvious that the Hebrew term “יום הראשון” is used for designating one of several special days that are
more special than others. That is, that term is being used for pointing to the
First as well as to the Seventh Day within the Feast of Unleavened Bread, that
is, to Abib 15 and to Abib 21, the days of the Last Supper and the day of the
opening of the tomb, respectively.
This usage reflects the similar use of
the Hebrew term “יום
השבת”
which term is being used for designating one of several very special Sabbaths
within the reckoning of Omer towards Pentecost, i.e. to the 1st, 8th,
or 50th day of 50. Cf. the study under this link and this link!
Perhaps more importantly, while studying
these things I find a clear answer to my own question as to whether or not one
or two special annual Sabbaths are to be honored within the Feast of Unleavened
Bread, that is, Abib 15 and 21, or else Abib 21 alone. My question is based upon
the language of this passage, and as to whether or not the Hebrew original
might possibly be using a reduplication for emphasis or not:
Exo 12:16 And in the first
day there shall be an holy
convocation, and in the seventh day
there shall be an holy convocation to you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that
which every man must eat, that only may be done of you.
Exo 12:16 וביום הראשׁון מקרא־קדשׁ
וביום השׁביעי
מקרא־קדשׁ יהיה
לכם כל־מלאכה לא־יעשׂה
בהם אך אשׁר
יאכל לכל־נפשׁ
הוא לבדו יעשׂה
לכם׃
Considering the
plural within the word “בהם,”
“them,” it is obvious, however, that said question of mine is superfluous.
Furthermore, based upon the within studies of Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew, it is
clear that the term “יום הראשׁון” is indeed a reference to Abib 15, and not to the Seventh-day
Sabbath within the Feast of Unleavened Bread.[2] Or, at the very
least, that must be true for Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew.
Considering the obvious fact that our
modern NT translations are derived in four steps from the original Hebrew writings
via intermediate translations first to Aramaic and then from Aramaic into Greek
and then from Greek into more modern languages, I find it helpful to understand
something about why some things of importance have been mistranslated or not
translated at all. The within study has helped me understand a little more re
how this confusion of tongues via several languages has led both Jews and
Christians to observe the
wrong days… Cf. this
link! But, I must not forget that that is a statement that does not exclude
even myself.[3]
Furthermore, I find it quite helpful and
instructive, as I have learnt through the within study, to recognize the
distinct difference between the Aramaic word “חד” designating, in
the NT, at least at times, the seventh day, whereas the Hebrew very similar
word “אחד”is
being used strictly for something that is first in time as in Day One of the
week. Thus, where the Aramaic is using “חד” for “foremost”
the Hebrew has “ראשון.” Likewise confusing, where Aramaic is using “קדמיא”
for “first in time” the Hebrew has “אחד.” To
complicate things, the Greek “μια,” being very
similar sounding to the Aramaic “קדמיא,” is being used for referencing not the Aramaic “קדמיא”
and the Hebrew “אחד” meaning “first in time,” but the Aramaic “חד”
and the Hebrew “ראשון” meaning “foremost.”
Specifically I find this insight helpful
when considering the timing of the event recorded in Mark 2:1-12, Luke 5:17-26,
and Matthew 9:1-8, which event is being, on the one hand, intimately associated
with the Aramaic word “ליומתא” (Mark 2:1) meaning “towards the summer” or “before the
summer,” and, on the other hand, with the Aramaic words “בחד מן
יומתא”
(Luke 5:17) meaning “in a foremost day of the
summer,” while, in this setting, quite probably referencing a certain day
that happens to be Day One of the week, and also day one of the important month
Aviv 1 [beginning at sunset Sat March 28,] 16 CE. Cf. this
link!
Considerations:
The
below findings are the results of
a raw study with the objective of better understanding the naming of the various
days in the Feast of Unleavened Bread, especially considering the two different
names being used in Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew, Chapter 26:17 & Chapter
28:1, both of which passages begin with the
words yom rishon…
Regarding
the confusion of tongues as it pertains to this particular issue
[The
Greek and Aramaic translations, as well as all discussion re said two
translations, were added as of 5941[(?)] 12 01 2027 [2011-03-06:]]
Notice
that the earliest extant Aramaic translation, as represented by the Syriac
Peshitta New Testament, in contradistinction to the Hebrew in Shem Tov’s Hebrew
Matthew, is using two different words for the English ‘first!’ Indeed, these two
Aramaic words, however clear their meaning may be in Aramaic, may well be a
major reason for the extant confusion that has been reigning so long, within
more modern translations, regarding the naming of the various days within the
Feast of Unleavened Bread. Consider for instance the Aramaic word being used in
Matthew 28:1, “חד,”which
corresponding Hebrew word, “אחד,” defines, in Genesis 1:5, Day One of the creation week. Yet,
in the Aramaic, this, “חד,” is the word being used for designating the seventh and last
day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread.[4]
In
addition, a word study of all the 11 instances[5],
in the Syriac Peshitta New Testament Matthew, of the exact same form of the
Aramaic word, “קדמיא,”which in Matthew 26:17 is
translated ‘first,’ clearly demonstrates that the Aramaic word “קדמיא”
is, as it should, in every instance pointing to something that is first in
time. To top this confusion off, however, this last Aramaic word “קדמיא,”
pronounced “cadmia,” meaning first in time, but not necessarily ‘foremost,’ is
very similar to the Greek word “μια,” pronounced
“mia,” meaning “first” in proper Greek, but being used for translating the
Hebrew word “ראשון” meaning “foremost” (while certainly also at times being the
word used for referencing things that are first in time; cf. the various
translations below!)
(An
example of importance: Notice for instance that the month Abib is not the 1st
month of the Scripture calendar year, yet it is the ‘foremost’ month in the
sense that it is used for solidly anchoring month number one of the Scripture
year at its correct point according to the seasons! What’s more natural than
that this important month, Abib, should be placed, just as it is, in the very
midst of the Scripture year? Isn’t that very much in accord with the Hebrew
concept of placing the focal point of every passage exactly at its very center?!)

In
the end it became clear to me that the Hebrew word ‘rishon’ is not primarily a
number designating order, as is the Hebrew word ‘echad,’ but that it, ‘rishon,’
is instead primarily a word indicating value, importance, priority, beginnings,
etc.. Cf. the Hebrew word ‘ראשׁ’ meaning ‘head’ (Strong’s H7217-7218.) Accordingly, it appears,
that is, from the context, as though the First and the Seventh Days of the
Feast of Unleavened Bread are both, in the above quoted passages, being
indicated by the use of the word ‘rishon;’ however, using different words to
follow, that is, for the purpose of indicating in what respect each of these
respective days are ‘ראשון,’ ’foremost.’
But
why not making your own Scripture word study to find out, or confirm, these
things for yourself? It is very easy even when you don’t know Hebrew at all!
Just use your e-Sword etc. Bible
Study program for finding the first instance in the Scriptures of the word you
are studying, e.g. ‘rishon’ or ‘H7225.’ Then read the context of the passage
where the word is found to see what the obvious and necessary meaning of the
word is. Compare your findings with Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary and the roots
there provided for the Hebrew word. After this, you may wish to expand your study
by comparing additional instances of the Hebrew word that you are studying in
the Scriptures. Voila, you’re an expert already!
Below you’ll see how I did my
original word study in this instance… a slight variation on the above

You’ll
discover firsthand the fundamentals for understanding Scripture time reckoning
as used by the ancient historian Josephus as well as by all the authors of the
Holy Scriptures! Much of this knowledge has - until now - been lost to the best
of scholars for many centuries.
“Great
truths which have been neglected and unappreciated for ages will be revealed by
the Spirit of God, and new meaning will flash out of familiar texts. Every page
will be illuminated by the Spirit of truth. The Bible is not sealed but
unsealed. The most precious truths are revealed; the living oracles are heard
by wondering ears, and the consciences of men are aroused into action.”
You
will make many surprising and exciting discoveries re the exact dates for
Jesus’ birth, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension… as well as the exact dates
of many, many more events found in your Bible, especially re the New Testament
times.
You’ll
discover the exact dates for the 12+ Roman Caesars beginning with Julius
Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius, Nero, Vespasian, Titus…
You’ll
discover the exact dates of most of the kings of Juda beginning with Hyrcanus
in the 2nd century BCE, Herod the Great, Agrippa, and many other
Judean kings and proconsuls, e.g. Pontius Pilate…
You’ll
discover many things re the Scripture traditions honored by all the disciples
and believers of the Apostolic times – as well as by the Jews – traditions that
have been long forgotten or not correctly restored when previously re-discovered…
Be
prepared to re-think and to re-learn… Things may not be as you always thought
they were… But you’ll decide!

[2] But what about the Feast
Tabernacles? Does the term
“יום
הראשׁון”
point to the 1st or to the 7th day within that feast? At
this time - 5925[(*??*)]
01 04 2029 [2013-04-15] - I do not have a conclusive answer to that question…
Yet, I am sure there is an answer to be found somewhere in the Bible!
Lev 23:35 ביום
הראשׁון מקרא־קדשׁ
כל־מלאכת עבדה
לא תעשׂו׃
[3] Upon discovering such errors of others and of oneself it is exceedingly easy to jump into new and yet other false conclusions while pursuing the real truth of a matter. Perhaps the following paragraph of my own will serve to illustrate that point while at the same time serving as a memo to myself re that certain question. Considering the fact that this article is focused most of all upon resolving a question re two specific passages in Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew, it becomes obvious that we are dealing with only one author and with only one event comprising only one week, which is the week of the crucifixion of Yeshua. My false conclusion re the meaning of the two instances of “יום רישון,” which obviously do apply to two different days, becomes obvious upon considering also the incompatibility of that false conclusion of mine with the words of Yeshua re “after Day Two is Passover.” Cf. Matt 26:2; Mark 14:1. Thus, if the Last Supper took place on a Tuesday evening, then it cannot possibly also be true that the Last Supper took place on a Friday evening as required by my false conclusion as quoted below from the last prior version of this Abstract:
“The within study has helped me understand
a little more re how this confusion of tongues via several languages has led
both Jews and Christians to observe the wrong days, for instance by keeping the
first and the seventh days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, whereas, to the
best of my current understanding, the Torah instructions are to
keep the “foremost,”
that is, the seventh day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread as well as the
regular weekly seventh day falling somewhere within those seven days of the
feast, that is, the day designed for the sacrifice of Omer, which day is to be
reckoned as number one in the count towards 50 and Pentecost.”
