How Are Cardinal Numbers, Especially when Using the Construct Format, being Used in the Bible for Designating Specific Days of the Week?

-

With an incentive from Joshua 1:11

Abstract:

By means of the within comprehensive Hebrew word study, of the extant OT and NT Hebrew manuscripts, I find conclusively that not only ordinal numbers, but also cardinal numbers, whether in the construct format or in the absolute format, but most specifically in the construct format, are being used, in all cases within the Holy Scriptures, for specifying specific days within the seven day cycles ordained per Leviticus 23. That is to say also, that duration, not tied to “the first x days” of the seven day week, not tied to “the first x days” of the month,[1] etc., requires, within the Hebrew Scriptures, the use of the term/format “x days and x nights,” while writing that term using the absolute format.

And, in parallel thereto, in re to a specific day[2] within such a reckoning: The use of the term/format “xth day and xth night…”

The findings within this Hebrew word study confirm my prior discoveries re the corresponding Greek words within these same Scripture passages.

These findings seem to constitute a significant and important revision and expansion of our prior understanding of ancient Hebrew and ancient Greek grammar.

Considerations:

In Page H. Kelley’s book Biblical Hebrew – An Introductory Grammar, I find a most helpful table, on top of page 97, that is showing all the Absolute and all the Construct forms of the Hebrew numbers 1 through 10. On the subsequent page (page 98) I also find the following statement:

(4) The absolute and construct forms of numerals can be used interchangeably, with no apparent difference in meaning.

Examples:

(a)    שׁלשׁה ימים three days     שׁלשׁת ימים three days

       [       absolute                    construct        ]

Based upon extensive studies of ancient and Biblical chronology I find reason to challenge the above statement. As shown below, the absolute and the construct forms do mean different things!:

Let’s consider carefully the following fifteen Bible passages, which comprise all of the passages that I have found in the Hebrew Scriptures that are using a term on the format “x days and x nights,” or “xth day and xth night.”[3]

Having noticed that the Hebrew is consistently using the singular יום with the number 40, whereas the plural ימים is being used in all other Bible passages (with number 3 or number 7, no other numbers with the terms “x days and x nights” or “xth day and xth night”are found when searching both English and Hebrew!,) for the time being[4] I find cause for differing myself from Page H. Kelley’s words, which words of his to me seem to reflect an uncertainty on his part, that is, on page 98 of his book: “The numerals from 11 to 19… They also normally occur with plural forms of nouns, although a few nouns (e.g… יום, “day…”) may remain in their singular forms when they stand after these numerals:

Matt 12:40 GH  For as he was in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the belly of the earth, (buried) for three days and three nights.

Matt 12:40 TLT  For as he was in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the belly of the earth, (buried) for three days and three nights.

In the above quoted 15 passages all of the 11 texts referencing “40 days and 40 nights” (KJV, ##1-7, 9, 11, 14,) are written in the absolute format, and none but #8 is using the definite article. The one exception (#8), using the definite article, is pointing back to another specific reference to day 40 and night 40.

Of the four remaining passages, not using the number 40, three (##10, 13, 15) are referencing “3 days and 3 nights” (KJV,) and one (#12) is referencing 7 days and 7 nights. Among all four, and thus among all 15, of these 15 only one (#12; Job 2:13) is using the construct format. #15 is from Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew and is using a different number format than the Old Testament passages.

Considering the one exception to the use of the absolute format, why is #12 written in the construct form? So far as I can tell there is no prior instance of 7 days and 7 nights within the book of Job. The answer seems obvious enough to me. The reference is to the seven day cycle introduced at the very beginning of time, the creation week! Thus I find Job 2:13 giving reference to the calendar reckoning introduced by our Creator Himself. As in “the seven of the days and the seven of the nights.” Furthermore, the words of Job 1:6 “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD” remind me of “a holy convocation” as in the Seventh Day Sabbath and as otherwise ordained in Leviticus 23. The same phrase is repeated in Job 2:1. Thus, if Job’s sickness began on a Seventh Day Sabbath, then, per Hebrew reckoning, the numbering of the days of Job’s sickness would coincide with the numbering of the days of the seven day week . Thus the use of the construct format in Job 2:13, that is, as in “Day Seven and Night Seven of the seven of the seven days

Considering also the fact that Yeshua was not crucified on a Saturday, it should be clear to all that none of the three extant Bible passages using the words translated “three days and three nights” three (##10, 13, 15 above) are a reference to any particular three days of the seven day week, for instance, as in “the first three days of the seven day week .” Thus the use of the absolute format in these passages, which format allows a reference to any arbitrary placement of a sequence of three days and three nights within the week, month, etc.. As in the case of Yeshua’s confinement in the tomb for three days and three nights, that is, for 72 hours, between sunset Friday and sunset Monday (cf. this link.)

On the usage of the construct format elsewhere in the Scriptures

The Hebrew grammar makes it clear that:

“the numerals 3-10… When they modify masculine nouns they take the feminine form; when they modify feminine nouns they take the masculine form. There is no satisfactory explanation for this phenomenon.”

(Kelley, Page H., Biblical Hebrew – An Introductory Grammar, p. 97)

This explains for instance why the masculine noun יום is being modified, in the construct format, by the feminine form of the numeral. Cf. #12 above. But why is this rule not being applied to “ושׁבעת לילות” of ##10/16, 12/18, and 13 above/below? Apparently this rule is being applied only once per expression…

Which would suggest that within each family of words within any one term, likewise the first two members being joined as one of every viable family unit is necessarily one male, and one female, the remainder, the children of such a term, can be no more than one single gender each, whether male or female. Accordingly, I beg to differ with Kelley’s words above: “There is no satisfactory explanation for this phenomenon.

The absolute format of “three days” is found only thrice in the OT, two of which (##16, 18 below) have been dealt with above (##10, 13,) plus one more (#17 below) in 1 Kings 12:5. Per the above discovery, it would seem as though 1 Kings 12:5 could be referencing any day of the seven day week, not necessarily the Third Day of that seven day week. However, if the king’s words were spoken on the Seventh Day Shabbat, which would not be unlikely, then the return date for the people would fall upon the Day Three of the seven day week regardless, because the Sabbath day would constitute Day Zero, that is, the accession day, of standard Hebrew reckoning of time. Indeed, the same event, as recorded in 2 Chronicles 10:5, is recorded using the construct format, thus indicating that the one and only way used in the Hebrew Bible to indicate duration, such as is not coinciding with the correspondingly numbered days of a seven day cycle of Yehovah Elohim’s design, is “x days and x nights” using the absolute format!:

16.  Absolute format:

 1Sa 30:12  ויתנו־לו פלח דבלה ושׁני צמקים ויאכל ותשׁב רוחו אליו כי לא־אכל לחם ולא־שׁתה מים שׁלשׁה ימים ושׁלשׁה לילות׃

1Sa 30:12 KJV  And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.

17.  Absolute format. Cf. 2 Chronicles 10:5 below!:

 1Ki 12:5  ויאמר אליהם לכו עד שׁלשׁה ימים ושׁובו אלי וילכו העם׃

1Ki 12:5 TLT And he said unto them, Walk ye away until number Three of seven days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

1Ki 12:5 KJV And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

18.  Absolute format:

In contradistinction, the construct format of “three days” is found 22 times in 21 OT verses:

Building upon the above discoveries from the OT Scriptures, we are now prepared for a further analysis of the New Testament Hebrew Scriptures as available by means of Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew. I find that, without exception, the above discoveries confirm my prior discoveries re the Greek translations of the corresponding passages:

1.    Absolute indeterminate format. Allowing any three day sequence within time. Cf. above!:

ST[9] Matt 12:40שכאשר היה במעי הדגה ג׳ ימים וג׳ לילות כן יהיה בן אדם בבטן הארץ ג׳ ימים וג׳ לילות בקבר.

Matt 12:40 GH  For as he was in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the belly of the earth, (buried) for three days and three nights.

2.    Construct format or ordinal number format. Both formats pointing to a specific day of the week. Cf. above!:

ST Matt 15:32אז אמר יש״ו לתלמידיו יש לי רחמנות מהם שהם מיחלים אותי זה שני ימים שעברו ואין להם מה שיאכלו. ואיני רוצה להוליכם בתענית יען לא יחלשו בדרך.

Matt 15:32 TLT Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they are continuing with me this number Two of seven days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.

3.    Absolute format. Not being written on the format “x days and x nights,” this passage also is a reference to a specific time of the week. Cf. above and at this link, and, for an in depth study, at this link!:

ST Matt 17:1אתר ששה ימים לקח יש״ו לפייט״רוס וגם יעקב לעז גאימ״י ויוחנן אחיו ויוליכם אל הר גבוה משם להתפלל הוא.

Matt 17:1 TLT After number Six of seven days Jesus took Peter, James, that is, Jimi, and John his brother and brought them to a high mountain where he might pray.

Matt 17:1 GH After six days Jesus took Peter, James, that is, Jimi, and John his brother and brought them to a high mountain where he might pray.

4.    Construct format re cardinal numbers, and also an ordinal number! Cf. above and at this link!:

ST Matt 26:2הלא תדעו שאחר שני ימים יהיה הפסח ובן האדם ימסר ביד היהודים לצליבה.

Matt 26:2 TLT Do you not know that after number Two of seven days [Monday evening after sunset] will be the Passover and the Son of Man will be delivered into the hand of the Jews for the gallows.

Matt 26:2 GH Do you not know that after two days will be the Passover and the Son of Man will be delivered into the hand of the Jews for the gallows.

5.    Absolute indeterminate format. Cf. above! Notice that these words were spoken on the Third Day of the seven day week!:

ST Matt 26:61 זה אמר יש לי יכולת להשחית מקדש האל ואחר ג׳ ימים לתקן אותו.

Matt 26:61 TLT (They said): This one said I have the power to destroy the temple of God and after number Three of seven days to repair it.

Matt 26:61 GH (They said): This one said I have the power to destroy the temple of God and after three days to repair it.

6.    Absolute format. Cf. above and, re “בעוד,” this link!:

ST Matt 27:40ואומרים ראח אפשר חרבת מקדש האל ובעוד שלשה ימים תושיע עצמך ואם אתה בן האל רד מן הצליבה.

Matt 27:40 TLT saying: See, (how) you would lay waste the temple of God and within number Three of next set of seven days (build it); save yourself; if you are the Son of God come down from the gallows.

Matt 27:40 GH saying: See, (how) you would lay waste the temple of God and in yet three days (build it); save yourself; if you are the Son of God come down from the gallows.

7.    Absolute  format. Cf. above and, re “לקץ,” this link!:

ST Matt 27:63ואמרו לו אדוננו אנו מזכירים שזה השקרן היה אומר בעודו בחיים שלקץ שלשה ימים יעמוד ויחיה.

Matt 27:63 TLT They said to him: Sir, we remember that this liar said while still alive that towards the beginning of number Three of seven days he would arise and come to life.

Matt 27:63 GH They said to him: Sir, we remember that this liar said while still alive that at the end of three days he would arise and come to life.

[1] As confirmed also within my article “When was Jordan Crossed?

[2] As evidenced by a closer study of the dates within the Hebrew version of Book of Jasher, Chapter 82, and upon reviewing my article 1469BCE2ndMoon20thDayVs4thDayOfTheWeek, which dates seems most fittingly to fall into place if and when the tabernacle was finished by the beginning of Month seven of the Hebrew calendar, and while thereafter teach and preparing the priests for their tabernacle responsibilities over the winter months.

[3] Cf. footnote #1 above!

[4] Having previously (cf. the last prior version of this article!) suspected that: “the 40th day may be in reference to the beginning of the first month, Abib. That is, the Lord spoke to Noah on the 40th day after the beginning of the first month, and the rains began on day 40…”, I presently find more powerful inherent reason in perceiving a singular noun as indicating one specified day within any given reckoning of days, that is, a reckoning in terms of duration.

[5] All TLT translations re these first 15 numbered passages, and all flood of Noah related time stamp passages for comparison, added, reviewed, and checked so as to rule out obvious inherent contradictions while also adding improved sense and understanding to these passages, on 5938[v2016-12-14-21:32] 01 20 2035 [Friday May 3, 2019.]

[6] George Howard

[7] בעוד within בעוד שׁלשׁת ימים seems to be an expression pointing to the specified Numbered Day within the next set of seven days (cf. at item #3 above, Gen 40:13, 20, and also my article: ’When Was Jordan Crossed? – Date stamps of the Book of Joshua!’)

[8] Cf. footnote #6 just above, and Joshua 2:16 at this link!
