Or the beginning of a Great Blessing? In my own life, the "Gold Stone" fascination of my tiny son led me to seek and find many 'stones' of great value in the Bible... As a grown up, my son's fascination turned into a desire for sharing the Advent Message via the golden nuggets within the books written by Ellen Gould White. - Time is money is gold... As in golden Bible chronology nuggets. - I cannot even count how many of those God has shown me! A period of seven "evenings and days", seven periods of darkness and coolness followed by seven periods of light and warmth, seven winters and summers, seven years... Matthew 25:5 Watchtowers in time: Safed means 'watchtower, sentry' The Great Safed Earthquake 1837 Jan 1, 1837 - Tiberias hit by the Earthquake of Safed/Galilee, killing 600 people of Tiberias; Caesar Tiberius, adopted by Caesar Augustus as his son and Co-regent on July 26, 1 BCE, the event upon which the Julian/Gregorian Calendar reckoning is obviously being built. Said earthquake could well be understood in terms of crushing the head of the statue in Nebuchadnezzar's dream as recorded in Daniel2. 1 notice also that 1+8+3+7=19, which number, 19, is a number being associated with death, as in the death of the Statue and of the Babylonian head of that Statue. Furthermore, said earthquake can certainly be perceived as perfecting Jesus' prophecy re the signs specified in Matthew 24:29-31. Said earthquake hitting Tiberias on Jan 1, 1837, could be seen as a sign, as a marker at the beginning of that Babylonian Calendar reckoning, further emphasizing rho ties with said prophecies of Daniel and of Jesus. ***) What’s logical about 1837=1+8+3+7=19=Death?

Likewise, what’s logical about 18=6+6+6=666=600, 60, and/or 6? This is not common math, is it? No, it is not. Yet, it does have some ties to the Hebrew language, and to the Hebrew concepts of Gematria.  And what about Revelation 13:18?

Well, to me things like these cannot, and should not, be used as facts, building stones, or foundations upon which any chronology or other structure of thought may be built.

Yet, just like words generally, things like these may be used for conveying thoughts and concepts. The Hebrew letter ‘vav’, the sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, when used as a number, means six (6). The word meaning of the same letter is ‘hook’ (Strong’s H2053), or “something that may be used for tying one thing to another”, as in “associations of thought”.

The Sixth Day is the day that ties the work days to God’s own day of rest, the Seventh Day. When used as such it is, by choice, the day of Preparation. As a consequence, the Seventh Day, the Sabbath, will be filled with many blessings. When not so used, those blessings will not follow. Furthermore 60, and 600, may be perceived as simply higher multiples, or higher dimensions, of the number 6. For instance, I may choose to perceive 6 as referring to man, a living being created on the Sixth Day, 60 as referring to a church or other group of men, and 600 as referring to a State, a Kingdom, or a nation. In that case 666=600+60+6 may be perceived as including each and all of those.

Strings of words are being used for conveying thoughts. Likewise, numbers, figures, may be stringed, or tied, together for purposes of conveying thoughts. Tiny children discover the meaning of words used by their parents by means of tying sounds, words, to real events or things. As they play with such words, they have fun, and soon enough each one of them are able to decipher the previously to them totally unfamiliar language of their mother tongue. Likewise, by playing with numbers, as with words, each one among us may discover concepts, things, and other treasures, that we would not otherwise have seen or noticed.

God is speaking in many ways. God knows each our pattern of thought, and He is certainly able to talk to each One of His Sons and Daughters using words and concepts familiar to each.

The importance of all communication is to convey something of value, to get the point across to another. It doesn’t matter so much which language, what words, or what figures or numbers we use for that purpose. The important thing is, do I get the point, or not? And for that matter, if I discover a different pearl of thought than that intended by the sender, it is still a thing of value, is it not?

Yet, it’s important to recognize the differences between ‘a wrong lesson’ and between ‘a right lesson’. It’s important to learn to distinguish between a lie and truth, between fiction and fact. Is it not?!

Accordingly, thinking along those lines, what values, what lessons, what treasures, might you choose to perceive in 2023 being the 180th anniversary of the point in time when the people in the Advent Movement first expected the Second Coming of Christ to take place? That is, as in 60+60+60=180, or perhaps 1843, 1903 [e.g. expectations re GC of the SDA], and 1963 [e.g. cf. The Return of the Gods by Jonathan Kahn]?

Here is another valuable discovery in consequence of considering such numbers: The third and last aftershock of the 1837 Safed Earthquake occurred on May 20, 1837, which point in time corresponds to the 15th, 16th, or 17th day of the 2nd Biblical calendar month. Jesus died on the cross on the 17th day of the 1st or 2nd Biblical calendar month in 19 AD. But 1837 AD – 19 AD = 1818 years exactly. 1+8+1+8=18. Or 1818 = 18 + 18; 18, or 6+6+6, 6+6+6; 6+6+6. Or even 666, 666, 666. To me that seems like an interesting correlation between the exact time of Jesus’ death, and between all the deaths in consequence of the Watchtower-Safed-Tiberias Earthquake in 1837… And between the 666 measurements associated with Nebuchadnezzar’s golden statue. That is, as in terms of the end of said 1818 years marking the beginning of ‘the time of the end’ [Dan 12:4, 9], which ‘time of the end’ constitutes the last portion of ‘the last days’ [Gen 49:1; Isaiah 2:2; Micah 2:1] aka ‘the last time’ [1 Peter 1:5; 1 John 2:18; Jude 1:18], aka ‘the latter days’ [Num 24:14; Deu 4:30; 31:29; Jer 23:20; 30:24; 48:47; 49:39; Eze 38:16; Dan 2:28; 10:14; Hos 3:5; 1 Tim 4:1] (as these several terms are being studied by Walter Veith in WUP #151) in terms of the true Christian era[1] between the death of Jesus on the cross and between the beginning of the Advent Movement with a special focus upon the stone that hit Ellen Harmon’s face and the effect that had upon her life mission as a harbinger of the final destruction of the statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Furthermore, 1818 years = 37 x 49 + 5 years = 6 x 6 +1 + 5 years. But the number 5 means ‘a window towards heaven’, and the number 1 is associated with ‘God is One’. Thus, I am reminded of the Sixth Day of Creation followed by the Creator’s own Sabbath and ‘the window towards heaven’ that is tied to the Seventh Day Sabbaths! I don’t know about you, but to me those are exiting thoughts filling me with joy… To me, these considerations say something about the significance of the Advent Movement in terms of the Second Coming of Christ.

I should add here an important discovery that I learned from Pastor Marc Chambers re the significance of the second chance Passover celebrations available to such as were prevented from attending the first and regular Passover celebrations. Pastor Chambers pointed out how this played out at the time of Noah’s Flood. I see it being played out also at the time of the crucifixion of Christ. And now I perceive a similar traumatic event in terms of the May 20 last aftershock of the Jan 1, 1837 Safed Earthquake. On a more personal note, I might add that probably the most mentally traumatic event in my own life took place on May 12, 1984, at the time of my wedding. That is, on yet another anniversary day of Jesus’ death on the Cross on May 12, 19 AD. I believe that event too could be thought of in terms of a second chance…

Not Forgetting Also the Certain Sound of the Trumpets

the Pen of Ellen Gould White

Since Her Being Hit in Her Face by That Stone

Within Days of That Same Earthquake on Jan 1, 1837…

Every church needs a clear, sharp testimony, giving the trumpet a certain sound. If we can arouse the moral sensibilities upon the subject of practicing temperance in all things, a very great victory will be gained.

Please consider and compare these names! – And how, by the associated lessons of history, God may guide each One among us within each our own Great Controversy between Good and Evil!

1)    Safed Earthquake (As in the Watchtower Earthquake that hit the City of Tiberias on Jan 1, 1837)

2)    Caesar Tiberius,

3)    the Tiber River flowing thru Rome. Notice, the name Tiber means ‘Christ’, as in an alternate Christ, e.g. BC=Before Christ. Caesar Tiberius constituting said alternate Christ. He was appointed as the adopted son and co-regent of Caesar Augustus on June 26, 1 BC (Tammuz 4 or 5); and

4)    the drying up of Euphrates River at the time of Belshazzar’s feast.

Please study and carefully consider God’s prophetic instructions touching upon the Euphrates River, as provided within each of these passages:

1.          Genesis 2:14 KJV:

”14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.

2.          Deuteronomy 11:22-26 KJV:

22 For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him;

“23 Then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves.

”24 Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be.

”25 There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.

”26 Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse…”

3.          2 Samuel 8:3 KJV:

David smote also Hadadezer, the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his border at the river Euphrates.

4.          2 Kings 23:29 KJV:

”29 In his days Pharaohnechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates: and king Josiah went against him; and he slew him at Megiddo, when he had seen him.

5.          1 Chronicles 18:3 KJV:

”3 And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates.

6.          Jeremiah 13:4-7; 46:10; 51:63 KJV:

13:4 Take the girdle that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins, and arise, go to Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.

13:5  So I went, and hid it by Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.

“13:6 And it came to pass after many days, that the LORD said unto me, Arise, go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.”

“13:7 Then I went to Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it: and, behold, the girdle was marred, it was profitable for nothing.”

“46:10 For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.”

“51:63 And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:”

7.          Revelation 9:14; 16:12 KJV:

9:14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.

“16:12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.”

Quotes from the Pen of Ellen Gould White:

8.          “…David, realizing how much dependent upon the result of this contest, took the field in person, and by the blessing of God inflicted upon the allies a defeat so disastrous that the Syrians, from Lebanon to the Euphrates, not only gave up the war, but became tributary to Israel. Against the Ammonites David pushed the war with vigor, until their strongholds fell and the whole region came under the dominion of Israel.” [PP 715.2]

9.          “This was the last feast of boasting held by the Chaldean king; for He who bears long with man’s perversity had passed the irrevocable sentence. Belshazzar had greatly dishonoured the One who had exalted him as king, and his probation was taken from him. While the king and his nobles were at the height of their revelry, the Persians turned the Euphrates out of its channel, and marched into the unguarded city. As Belshazzar and his lords were drinking from the sacred vessels of Jehovah, and praising their gods of silver and gold, Cyrus and his soldiers stood under the walls of the palace. “In that night,” the record says, “was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. And Darius the Median took the kingdom.”   [Becho May 2, 1898, par. 6]

10.       “In the fertile valleys of the Tigris and the Euphrates there dwelt an ancient race, which, though at that time subject to Assyria, was destined to rule the world. Among its people were wise men who gave much attention to the study of astronomy; and when they noticed that the shadow on the sundial had been turned back ten degrees, they marveled greatly. Their king, Merodach-baladan, upon learning that this miracle had been wrought as a sign to the king of Judah that the God of heaven had granted him a new lease of life, send ambassadors to Hezekiah to congratulate him on his recovery, and to learn, if possible, more of the God who was able to perform so great a wonder.” [RH May 15, 1915, par. 1]

11.       “In the days of Solomon the kingdom of Israel extended from Hamath on the north to Egypt on the south, and from the Mediterranean Sea to the river Euphrates. Through this territory ran many natural highways of the world’s commerce, and caravans from distant lands were constantly passing to and fro. Thus there was given to Solomon and his people opportunity to reveal to men of all nations the character of the King of kings, and to teach them to reverence and obey Him….” [CC 195.2]

12.       “More than a century before, Inspiration had foretold that “the night of … pleasure” (Isaiah 21:4), during which king and ounsellors would blaspheme God, would suddenly be changed into a season of fear and destruction. And now, while still in the festal hall, the king is informed that “his city is taken” by the enemy. Jeremiah 51:31. Even while he and his nobles were drinking from the sacred vessels and praising their gods of silver and gold, the Medes and Persians, having turned the Euphrates out of its channel, were marching into the heart of the unguarded city. The army of Cyrus now stood under the walls of the palace. The city was filled with the soldiers of the enemy, “as many as locusts” (Verse 14, RSV), and their triumphant shouts could be heard above the despairing cries of the astonished revelers  [SS 275.5]

Please enjoy also the Swedish film Barfota Rop (Engl.: ‘Bare Feet Cries’ or ‘Bare Feet Trumpeters’; English subtitles included)

The film is a documentary about the children in Sweden called ‘Roparna’ (Engl.: The Trumpeters) who miraculously preached from the rooftops of houses and churches around the year 1840, and who thus constituted a most remarkable expression of the world-wide phenomenon known as the Advent Movement. Some Thoughts and Some Parallels

Between the Above Quoted items, and

Between What I Perceive in the Here and the Now

1.     I seem to perceive a parallel between the four rivers of Gen 2:14, and between the four kingdoms in the Book of Daniel.

Likewise, between the Euphrates River running through Babylon, and between the Tiber River running through Rome.

Likewise, between the coded laws of Babylon, and between the coded laws of Rome, both of which deceptive codes of law are at the heart of our various coded State laws throughout our planet. Exemplified also by the very name ‘Black’s Law Dictionary’.

2.     In contrast to the above said laws of the State, laws of a dead statue, consider our Creator’s own laws – and the fruit thereof!

3.     “David’s borders…” at Euphrates. Borders = boundaries = definitions of words within said codes of law.

4.     Josiah, a godly king, as was David, yet David was seeking, and heeding, God’s specific instruction, Josiah did not…

5.     Accordingly, David was successful, Josiah died…

6.     “Girdle… upon thy loins…” Consider Eph 6:14 “loins girt about with truth…”, vs. Greek philosophy “belly and thighs of brass” Dan 2:32, 39; 7:6; 8:8, 9, 21,22, as “hidden within a hole of the rock…” Consider the Ark of the Covenant as hidden by Jeremiah in Jerusalem, vs. Greek philosophy hidden within Roman codes of law… “After many days… it was profitable for nothing…”

7.     “Loose the four angels…” Consider the above said four rivers and four kingdoms, and the message about each one of those kingdoms. Each one granted its portion in time to rule, its hour, day, month, and year! Consider also the four angel’s messages of Revelation 14 and 18!

Re the above quotes from the Pen of Ellen Gould White:

8.     Consider the true sovereignty of the Sons of God, of the true Israel, those who truly prevail in the Creator God. How does today’s Sovereignty Movement apply to 1 Peter 2:8-10? Wishful thinking while doing nothing but passively waiting, or else, truly receiving and applying our Redeemer’s guidance towards the purpose defined in Exodus 20:2?

9.     What parallels may we perceive between the revelry and feasting of Belshazzar, and between the revelry and feasting so common and prevalent today? What can be learnt towards a victory over evil in each our lives today?

10.  there dwelt an ancient race… destined to rule the world…”.  Could this be a reference to the Khazars, and to the horseback people [the Avars] who fled westwards from the severe famine in north eastern Siberia around 640 AD [See 14:55 – 25:10 in this video]? That is, the people behind the curtains, who have been ruling the world ever since? The same people who reportedly were given the option to become either Moslems, Jewish, Christians, or else to die. Choosing to become Jewish, they took over that nation while becoming one with them in ruling the entire planet, including their aims towards One World Government.

11.  Consider the Euphrates River vs. “Through this territory ran many natural highways of the world's commerce, and caravans from distant lands were constantly passing to and fro”.

12.  Consider the words “gods of silver and gold” vs. today’s talk about precious metals-based currencies and investments…

Were the Following Two Events Almost Simultaneous?

The Earthquake of Safed in Galilee on Jan 1, 1837, and

The Stone that Hit Ellen Harmon’s nose?

Considerations:

Ellen’s ninth birthday, and the beginning of her 10th year following delivery, occurred on November 26, 1836.

It was midafternoon and school was out. The 9-year-old twins, Ellen and Elizabeth, were on their way home, along with a classmate. ” [1BIO 26.4-28.1]

Thus, her accident took place within a very few days of the Tiberias earthquake, the Earthquake of Safed, the Earthquake of Galilee, that took place Jan 1, 1837, around 4 PM, local time!  Certainly not simultaneous to the exact hour, but at about the same hour, local time. (Eastern Standard Time and Israel Standard Time are 7 hours apart.) But how many days apart?

“The main shock occurred around four in the afternoon, followed by a second strong shock five minutes later” [Wikipedia]

But notice too, the name Safed (Hebrew הצפית as found in Isa 21:5; Strong’s H6844) means “a sentry [KJV:] - watchtower.”

“Prepare the table, watch in the watchtower, eat, drink: arise, ye princes, and anoint the shield.  Isa 21:5

Quotes:

At the age of nine years an accident happened to me which was to affect my whole life. In company with my twin sister, and one of our schoolmates, I was crossing a common in the city of Portland, Maine, when a girl about thirteen years old followed us, threatening to strike us. My parents had taught me never to contend with any one, but if we were in danger of being injured, to hasten away and return home. We were doing this, running towards home, but the girl was following us with a stone in her hand. I turned to see how far she was behind me, and as I turned, the stone hit me on my nose. I fell senseless. When I revived, I found myself in a merchant's store, the blood streaming from my nose, my garments covered with blood, and a large stream of blood on the floor…” [2SG 7.1]

“I well remember one night in winter when the snow was upon the ground…”  [2SG 9.3]

At the time of my misfortune my father was absent in Georgia. When he returned, he spoke to my brother and sisters, and inquired for me. I was pointed out by my mother; but my father did not know me. It was hard to make him believe that I was his Ellen. This cut me to the heart; yet I tried to put on an appearance of cheerfulness, when my heart ached… My heart seemed so heavy, and ached as though it would break, yet I could not shed a tear. I often thought that if I could weep out my feelings, then I should find relief. Others would pity and sympathize with me, and that weight, like a stone upon my heart, would be gone How vain and empty the pleasures of earth looked to me.” [2SG 10.1]

At the time of my misfortune, my father was absent in Georgia. When he returned, he embraced my brothers and sisters, and then inquired of me. I, timidly shrinking back, was pointed out by my mother, but my own father did not recognize me. It was hard for him to believe that I was his little Ellen whom he had left only a few months before a healthy, happy child. This cut my feelings deeply, but I tried to appear cheerful, though my heart seemed breaking.  [LSMS 5.2]

In 1837, when Ellen was 9, America was struck with depression, and the hat business was severely affected. Robert Harmon found that the stock of hats made during [Probably: ‘the early part of…’, or else ‘in preparation of…’ Considering Ellen’s own reference to “winter”, prior to the return of her father; cf. above! Cf. also “probably” and “Perhaps” in the paragraph below! /ToL] the long winter months of 1836-1837 moved very slowly, so he decided to take his supply to Georgia in hope of a more ready sale…

The family probably waited outside on the sidewalk as Father Harmon went in to purchase his ticket. Perhaps as they waited they would hear the coachman's horn signaling an approaching stage. This was the best part of it all, for no matter how slowly the stages traveled between stops, the drivers had trained their teams to perfection in the art of arriving at the tavern door with great dash and spirit.

As Robert Harmon passed up his hat bag to the top of the stage, then climbed in and turned to wave Goodbye, he had his last look at the cheerful, perfectly formed features of Ellen's face. The next time he was to see her, she would be much changed.

Chapter 2—(1836-1843) Abrupt Changes in Ellen's Life

It was midafternoon and school was out. The 9-year-old twins, Ellen and Elizabeth, were on their way home, along with a classmate. ” [1BIO 26.4-28.1]

In 1837 the United States was struck by a depression. Robert Harmon, a hatmaker and father of eight, the youngest being his 9-year-old twins, Ellen and Elizabeth, had moved his family from the rural farm in Gorham, Maine, to the city of Portland, where he thought to find a better market for hats. But even the hat business had been affected. So one day in the winter of 1837-1838 he decided to take his supply of hats to Georgia in hope of a more ready sale. Doubtless there was an air of excitement in the family the night before he was to leave, as they helped wrap the hats and place them in a large leather bag.” [WV 15.8]

At the age of eleven, while attending a Methodist camp meeting with her parents, Robert and Eunice Harmon, Ellen gave her heart to God. Shortly thereafter she was baptized by immersion in the sea and was received as a member of the Methodist Church. With other members of her family she attended the Adventist meetings in Portland, which began in 1840. She accepted fully the views of the nearness of the second advent of Christ presented by William Miller and his associates, and confidently looked for the Saviour's imminent return. [1TT 13.2]

I knew not how to write so that others could read it till God gave me my visions. I went to school but very little on account of my health. I do not think I went to school a day after I was twelve years old, and did not go then but a few days at a time, when sickness would cause me to take [to] my bed for weeks and sometimes for months. The first I wrote anything that could be called writing was after I had been sick [and] the prayer of faith was put up for me, and healing …  [1EGWLM 127.2]

But I began to turn to my Saviour where I found comfort. I sought the Lord earnestly, and received consolation. I believed that Jesus did love even me. For two years I could not breathe through my nose. My health was so poor that I could attend school but little. It was almost impossible for me to study, and retain what I learned.  [2SG 11.1]

After my severe accident that marred my features so decidedly, I was not expected to live, and few thought it possible that I could live. When I attended the academy for youth in the second grade in Portland, Maine, a teacher was appointed over a section of seats to give us lessons in writing. I occupied one of the seats that this lady teacher was appointed over. But after my terrible sickness, when at twelve years old I began to attend school, I could not learn to write because my right hand was so nervously weak and unsteady. The teacher who was appointed as overseer over my section was the very one who had thrown the stone that nearly cost me my life when I was nine years old. Some time before, I had attempted to attend school. With all my efforts to hold my hand steady, I could not possibly write. After many times, trying my best, the teacher who cast the stone was instructing me and encouraging me in every way. Tears were often in her eyes, for she knew who had spoiled my features. After trying her best she said, “Well, you will have to wait until the muscles of your right hand can hold a pen steady.”

I still remained in my reading class and was surprised to be placed in the class with much older students, right where I was many months before. They all encouraged me that I should after a time get stronger and be able to take my writing lessons. But sitting confined at a desk proved too great injury to me, and I was not gaining healthwise. I tried this a short while and the decision was made by an understanding physician that no school taxation of mind or body should come upon me until my health was confirmed. Encouragement was given me that as soon as I was strong I could attend schoolagain. However, though I tried hard to continue at school, I had to give it up, and never entered the schoolroom as a student after I was twelve years old. This was one of my greatest trials.” [15LtMs, MS 88a, 1900, par.7-8]

It was probably in the autumn of 1833 that Ellen started school, just before her sixth birthday. It could have been earlier, for at that time children could be in school at 5 or even a bit younger. The school was conducted in a frame building on Brackett Street, some four or five short blocks from the Harmon home. In 1836 the wooden building was replaced by a two-story brick structure, and it was doubtless in this building that Ellen spent her last full year in school. School was conducted during both summer and winter in Portland, and once the grind began it was merciless on small children. But Ellen loved it, and she had great ambitions in obtaining a good education and making something of herself.” [1BIO 25.3]

Then I was bidden to write out the things that had been revealed to me. Oh, I thought, how can I write? On account of an accident I had been obliged to leave school when I was twelve years old, and for months I had hovered between life and death. I had tried to learn to write, but my hand was too unsteady to hold a pen. Still the word came to me that I should write. So I began to write; and by the Lord’s help, I have since written thousands of pages.  [21LtMs, Ms 147, 1906, par. 46]

And Portland is where I lived when this accident occurred. They thought I could go to school after I was laid up for about two years. And the strange thing happened. That very girl was the monitor over my section. She knew just exactly what the matter was with me, that I was so nervous that I could not hold a pen in my hand, and she would cry, and the sweat would roll down off of her face. But nevertheless, the Lord said, Write, and I took the pen to write. And lo, my arm was strengthened, the nerves were strengthened, and I have been writing ever since. I have been writing books and books and books by the representation that the Lord has given me. I said, Why I cannot use that hand. Said He, Write, write. And I commenced to write, and I have not stopped writing since—the eleven months even, when I was in such awful suffering, I kept that hand moving, and wrote twenty-four hundred pages in a few months.” [24LtMs, Ms 120, 1909, par. 32]

I never went to school after I was twelve years old; because of this accident, I could not. I could not take the lessons. I suffered a great deal to give up the school, but I had to give it up. Now, here the Lord gave me instruction, but that hand would go just like that; I could not hold anything, scarcely, in that hand. Well, the wonder was, the little girl that threw the stone, it seemed in the providence of God, that very girl was placed over our line of seats, and that girl worked to try to have me hold the pen, and the sweat would roll down her face. She was a good deal older than I, but she threw that stone, never thinking, I suppose, it would hit, but it did hit, and it nearly cost me my life. But she knew what the matter with me was, and she would stand over me, and she would hold my hand, and finally she said, It is no use, you cannot do it. And the teachers and the doctors advised me not to attend school. O, how I cried about it!  [22LtMs, Ms 185, 1907, par. 30-32]

But there was a Teacher that came to me, One that is the highest Teacher, “Take your pen and write what I shall give you”—in the instruction that was given me in the night season. “I cannot write; I cannot write.” “Take the pen and write what I shall give you. You want to preserve every word that is possible that I shall give you.” Well, finally they brought me a pen and ink, and I took it in my fingers, and lo, there was not a tremble there. I wrote out what I had been given just as though I had had an education for years, wrote it right out in even hand, fine writing. Well, that gave me courage, and then from that time, I have tried to keep the light that God has given me until I have a series of books. I have written almost everything that I have had, and it is preserved to give to the people. Much has come, and there is much more to come. Well, there, who would have thought that I could use this hand as I have done. When I went to Australia (relates experience of sickness, but how that hand was preserved.)

I know that God has an interest in us. If He had not, I should have been, after a little, lying in the grave. The doctors said I could not live. They said, It is impossible for you to live. Your lungs are affected, and with the suffering that you have gone through it is not possible that you can live. But in the providence of God I began my work in public labor, to speak to others when I was sixteen years old. And I have been at it ever since, up to the present time, and the Lord has preserved my life, and I thank Him with heart and soul and voice. I will praise Him.  [22LtMs, Ms 185, 1907, par. 30-32]

In March, 1840, William Miller visited Portland, Me., and gave his first course of lectures on the second coming of Christ. These lectures produced a great sensation, and the Christian church, on Casco street, that Mr. Miller occupied, was crowded day and night. No wild excitement attended these meetings, but a deep solemnity pervaded the minds of those who heard his discourses. Not only was there manifested a great interest in the city, but the country people flocked in day after day, bringing their lunch baskets, and remaining from morning until the close of the evening meeting.  [LS80, 136.3]

At the age of seventeen, when all my friends thought I was an invalid for life on account of a severe accident I had sustained in my girlhood, a heavenly visitant came and spoke to me, saying, “I have a message for you to bear.” “Why,” I thought, “there certainly must be a great mistake somewhere.” Again were spoken the words: “I have a message for you to bear. Write out for the people what I give you.” Up to that time, my trembling hand had not been able to write a line. I replied, “I cannot do it; I cannot do it.” “Write! write!” were the words spoken once again. I took the pen and paper, and I began to write; and how much I have written since, it is impossible to estimate. The strength, the power, was of God.” [1NL70.4]

As best I can tell from the quoted paragraphs above, Ellen did her best to attend school during the two school years between her 10th and 13th birth days. That is, the two school years between Nov 26, 1837 – Nov 26, 1840. In other words, the two school years of the winters of 1838/1839 and 1839/1840. The winter prior to that was the school year 1837/1838, which would have begun in the autumn when Ellen was still nine years old, that is, seeing that she turned 10 on Nov 26, 1837. If so, then her accident would have taken place during the early part of said school year, prior to her 10th birthday Nov 26, 1837, in the early part of the winter and school year of 1837/1838 and her father would have been in Georgia for several months during that winter season 1837/1838. But that does not seem to allow for William Millers March 1840 preaching in Portland, does it?

If, on the other hand, her accident occurred shortly after her 9th birthday on Nov 26, 1836, during the school year and winter of 1836/1837, then that was of course also the time when her father was in Georgia. Said two school years would then have been the 1837/1838 and the 1838/1839 winter seasons. It would be helpful to know either the exact date or month of her accident, and/or the date when said two-story brick structure was completed such that Ellen could have “spent her last full year in school…” in that building. I don’t find anything further on either, but this option certainly allows for Ellen’s accounting of William Miller’s preaching in March 1840.

On Sunday morning January 15, 2023, I found the paragraphs below, which seem to answer most of my 10 questions above in the affirmative, except for my question #10. That is, to the effect that Ellen’s accident took place shortly following her 9th birthday at the end of 1836 or at beginning of 1937. In other words: Ellen’s accident and the Earthquake of Safed in Galilee were very closely related in time.

Specifically, in the two paragraphs below my eyes were opened to the fact that Ellen was 12 years old at the time of William Miller’s lectures in Portland in March 1840, which fact then makes it clear that her failed attempt to resume her schooling in the third school year following her accident occurred following said lectures of William Miller. This is reflected also by the second paragraph below which relates an event following the summer camp meeting subsequent to William Miller’s March 1840 lectures:

In March, 1840, [Ellen White's earliest accounts, based on memory, incorrectly give the year as 1839 (see Spiritual Gifts, 2:12).] a revival in Portland, Maine, brought some hope to the 12-year-old girl. William Miller lectured in the city on the second coming of Christ. The meetings were held in the Casco Street Christian church. She attended with her friends and family. Her description of the meetings is vivid:” [1BIO 34.1]

I again became very anxious to attend school and make another trial to obtain an education. But upon attempting to resume my studies my health rapidly failed, and it became apparent that if I persisted in attending school it would be at the expense of my life. I had found it difficult to enjoy religion in a large female seminary, surrounded by influences calculated to attract the mind and lead it from God.  [LS80 148.1]

I find it likely that the demand for hats may well have declined even as early as in the autumn of 1836:

“Secondly, the Deposit and Distribution Act of 1836 placed federal revenues in various local banks, derisively termed "pet banks", across the country. Many of the banks were located in the West. The effect of both policies was to transfer specie away from the nation's main commercial centers on the East Coast. With lower monetary reserves in their vaults, major banks and financial institutions on the East Coast had to scale back their loans, which was a major cause of the panic, besides the real estate crash.[11]  [Wikipedia]

“Monetary reserves in New York City deposit banks fell from $7.2 million in September 1836 to $1.5 million in May 1837. The Specie Circular, an executive order issued by President Jackson in 1836 mandating that all public land sales over 320 acres be purchased in specie, similarly diverted precious metals from east to west.” [economic-historian.com]

“Specie Circular, (July 11, 1836), in U.S. history, an executive orderissued by President Andrew Jacksonrequiring that payment for the purchase of public lands be made exclusively in gold or silver.”  [Britannica.com]

Question:

.

When did Ellen's accident occur? Shortly after her 9th birthday Nov 26, 1836, or else, shortly prior to her 10th birthday Nov 26, 1837?

- It seems to me that some of the biographical info indicates the former and earlier date, other info indicates the latter and later date.

- The former and earlier date seems to me as being supported by the stronger evidence. Yet, if that is true, that would seem to contradict the years indicated within the statement "So one day in the winter of 1837-1838 he decided to take his supply of hats to Georgia in hope of a more ready sale..." as recorded in [WV 15.8]. Likewise, at least to some extent the dates/years in this quote seems misleading: "Robert Harmon found that the stock of hats made during the long winter months of 1836-1837 moved very slowly, so he decided to take his supply to Georgia in hope of a more ready sale…" [1BIO 26.4-28.1]?

.

1. Am I correct in reckoning each school year from autumn through the following summer?  [1BIO 25.3].

2. Am I correct in assuming that the two years of intermittent school attendance by EGW following her accident are two such autumn thru summer school years? [2SG 7.1], [2SG 11.1], [1BIO 25.3].

3. Am I correct in perceiving two such years of school attendance as above said, and a failed attempt of beginning a third such year of schooling in the autumn 1839, while still at age 12? [1EGWLM 127.2], [22LtMs, Ms 185, 1907, par. 30-32], [21LtMs, Ms 147, 1906, par. 46], [1BIO 25.3].

4. Am I correct in perceiving said failed school attempt of Ellen at 12 years of age, as an event prior to William Miller's first course of lectures on the second coming of Christ in Portland, Main in March, 1840?  [LS80, 136.3], [1BIO 25.3], [15LtMs, MS 88a, 1900, par.7-8].

5. Am I correct in placing said two full years of Ellen's intermittent schooling, following her accident, from the fall of 1837 thru the summer of 1838, and from the fall of 1838 thru the summer of 1839, respectively? [2SG 7.1], [1BIO 25.3], [15LtMs, MS 88a, 1900, par.7-8].

6. If so, am I correct in placing the school year of her accident at age nine from the fall of 1836 thru the summer of 1837? This seems also indicated by the reference to 1836 in the Chapter titel: "Chapter 2—(1836-1843) Abrupt Changes in Ellen's Life". [2SG 7.1], [1BIO 26.4-28.1].

7. Ellen is referencing a winter experience with snow on the ground shortly after her accident. Am I correct in placing that winter as the winter of 1836/1837? [2SG 9.3], [1BIO 26.4-28.1].

8. If the answers to my questions above are consistently "Yes", then Ellen's father's trip to Georgia must also be placed in the winter of 1836/1837, correct?  [2SG 10.1], [WV 15.8], [1BIO 26.4-28.1], [LSMS 5.2].

9. But if #8 above is also correct then the biographical statement that her father's trip to Georgia occurred in the winter of 1837/1838, must necessarily be incorrect? Is that not so?  [2SG 10.1], [WV 15.8], [1BIO 26.4-28.1], [LSMS 5.2].

10. Alternatively, if her father's Georgia trip did indeed occur in the winter of 1837/1838, then why am I seeing an absence of evidence in support of Ellen's attendance at William Miller's meeting within the two years of her intermittent schooling?  [LSMS 5.2], [2SG 10.1], [WV 15.8], [LS80, 136.3], [1BIO 26.4-28.1].

.

I am looking forwards to any rays of light you may have to share on the above issue,

Subject:  Exact date of Ellen Harmon's accident at age 9?

Dear Brethren,

.

Yesterday I sent you a web mail, asking some questions re the exact date of Ellen Harmon's accident at age 9?

.

Upon further studies, today I found some info that you may find helpful towards fully resolving said questions of mine. So far, what I have found seems to indicated that items #1-9 in my earlier webmail to you should be answered in the affirmative, whereas item #10 contains some errors of mine. As follows:

Subject: Typo?:  Was Ellen born "Nov 16", or else Nov 26, 1827?

Ellen G. Harmon and her twin sister were born November 16, 1827, at Gorham, Maine, in the northeastern part of the United States. When nine years of age, Ellen was involved in an accident in which a stone was thrown by a thoughtless classmate. The severe face injury nearly cost her life and left her in a weakened condition so that she was unable to continue her schooling. [CCh 17.3]
