What is the true meaning of
בעוד?
With an incentive from
Joshua 1:11
Considerations:
While doing a more
comprehensive study of the Book of Joshua’s
date stamps re the events at the time of the crossing of Jordan, it became
clear to me that the word “בעוד” is not quite correctly
translated in KJV. I found that a more correct translation would be in terms of
pointing to a subsequent set of three days. My challenge here is to find a
correct and consistent understanding and translation of the Hebrew word ‘בעוד:’
Jos 1:11 עברו בקרב
המחנה וצוו
את־העם לאמר
הכינו לכם
צידה כי בעוד שׁלשׁת
ימים אתם
עברים
את־הירדן הזה
לבוא לרשׁת
את־הארץ אשׁר
יהוה אלהיכם
נתן לכם
לרשׁתה׃
Joshua 1:11 KJV
Pass through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you
victuals; for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess
the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to
possess it.
Joshua 1:11 TLT Pass
through the host, and command the people, saying, Prepare you victuals; for within the
time period beyond the first three days of the week ye shall
pass over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land, which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it.
I find 12 instances of “בעוד” in KJV and 18 hits when Partial Match is
being checked in e-Sword. The added 6 instances are “בעודנו” (2 instances,) “בעודי” (2 instances,) “ובעוד” (1 instance,) and “בעודה” (1 instance.) Thus, I find no Bible instances “עוד” taking on the prefixes “ל-” or “מ-.”
The Hebrew root “עוד” is
consistently, in KJV, translated in terms of something beyond something else,
mostly in re to time. The first instance of “עוד” is found in Gen 4:25. The first
instance of “,בעוד” without
more, is Gen 40:13, and the first
instance of “*בעוד*” is Gen 25:6. Gen 25:6
has “בעודנו,” which points to the
remainder of Isaac’s life; KJV has “while he yet lived.” Gen 40:13 & 19
have “בעוד
שׁלשׁת ימים.” That those words should
be translated in terms of “within the next three days,” that is, “within the
three days beyond,” is made amply clear from the consistent obvious meaning of
the first, and of the numerous subsequent, instances in the Bible of the bare
word “עוד” without
more, which word is clearly pointing to something repetitive, something beyond,
etc.:
Typical translations of
the Hebrew word “עוד:”
Gen 4:25 וידע אדם עוד את־אשׁתו
ותלד בן ותקרא
את־שׁמו שׁת
כי שׁת־לי
אלהים זרע אחר
תחת הבל כי

Gen 4:25 KJV And Adam knew his wife again; and

Gen 7:4 KJV For yet seven days, and I will cause it
to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance
that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
Gen 7:4 TLT For yet seven days, and [after
that] I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights;
and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of
the earth.
