Hebrew Word Study

קץ

What Exactly Does it Mean?

How is it Used in the Scriptures?

“Before/at/after the end of…?” or “before/at/after the beginning of…?”

 Abstract:

Praise the Lord of Hosts, our Creator, our Savior, and our Redeemer, who is cleansing us little by little from all our errors and misconceptions!...

This word study, based as it is upon a comprehensive revision of ancient chronology as anchored upon astronomical markers of time, makes it clear that the Hebrew word קץ has been greatly misunderstood heretofore and that a correct translation of this Hebrew word should be primarily understood as a reference to a boundary point at the entry, or at the beginning, of something, and not as a reference to a boundary point at the exit, or to the end, of something. Considering the nearly one hundred of the many passages in the Bible that are using this word and this rather remarkable difference in meaning, between that which is found in most translations and the within findings, this discovery may make quite some difference for some students of the Holy Scriptures.

Just to emphasize this difference, let me point you to a passage where two different Hebrew words are being contrasted, one, H319אחרית,” is clearly pointing to the end of things, the other, H7093קץ,is pointing to the beginning of things. The passage is found in Daniel 12:8-9. Please press the link for a brief review!

For those readers that are not as yet convinced about the chronology being presented within this website, or even by the above referenced, there is yet another brief passage presenting, within itself alone, proof of the within contention re the meaning of said Hebrew word קץ.” That passage is found in 2 Kings 18:9-10. Please enjoy!

Background for this study:

This study was prompted by my review of the chronology of the kings of Judah and Israel, and particularly in re to this passage…

Re David, Absalom & Solomon:

2 Samuel 15:7  ויהי מקץ ארבעים שׁנה

2 Samuel 15:7 KJV  And it came to pass after forty years… (cf. item #31 below!)

The findings of this study indicate that the Hebrew word ‘ketz’ is consistently used in the Scriptures to mean a point of ‘cut-off’ and accordingly to indicate a point in time marking the beginning of a numbered or otherwise specified, ‘cut-off,’ time, e.g. a calendar year, a lunar month, a sunset to sunset day, etc.. Yet, the same word is also used to indicate the limit of someone’s life, i.e. the time when life is being ‘cut-off’ or when a process of preparation has been completed, e.g. in Esther 2:12 (#21 below.)

This study was important to my OT chronology study because of the 27 instances of the word ‘ketz’ in reference to various dated events.

Praise the Lord of Hosts, the Creator of the Universe!

Considerations & details:

To begin with, I found 62 instances of Strong’s H7093 in the Old Testament. In three of these passages the word is used to designate the borders of land (cf. ##38, 62, & 70 below.) Somewhat later my study was expanded by a variant of this word (some of those passages using the word “קצה,” i.e. items ##3, 7, 9-12, 14, 16, 17, 19, 20, 22-28, 32, 34, 36, 37, 48, 50, 52, 53, 57, 59, 63-65, 67, 73, 81, & 82 below – hmmm, seems as though #38, using “קצה,” has received a wrong Strong’s #: H7093 rather than one of H7096-8, doesn’t it?) to the present 97 passages itemized below. At that time I found an additional seven passages referencing borders of land (cf. ##7, 14, 24, 25, 26, 28, and 82 below.) In the book of Job, per KJV, this word is used to indicate the end of life, the end of words, the limit of darkness, or infinity - as a thing without limit (cf. ##44-47.) Similarly in Psalms (cf. ##49, 51) Ecclesiastes (cf. ##54, 55, 56,) and Isaiah 9:7 (#58.) Likewise for Jeremiah’s 51:13 and Lamentations (cf. ##71, 72) and all but one passage (#79) in Ezekiel (cf. ##74-78, 80) using H7093. Each and all of said passages find favorable translations in terms of either beginnings or infinity while omitting the concept of an end. Daniel’s use of this word is somewhat unique in that it, per KJV, is being used in various ways to indicate the time towards the end of time (cf. ##83-95,) however after careful consideration I find that all passages of Daniel using this Hebrew word are consistent with a translation in terms of beginnings rather than in terms of an end – although it may well confound some people’s prior prophetic interpretations… before eventually being sorted out and updated. The same may be said re Amos’ and Habakkuk’s usages (cf. ##96 & 97.) Thus is accounted for 36 out of the 62 instances of this word, H7093. There remains, of these 62, yet 27 instances where the word is used in reference to specific time (another 10 instances of such specific time references are found within items #3-Gen 8:3, #17-Deu 14:28, #22-Jos 3:2, #23-Jos 9:16, #32-2 Sam 24:8, #34-1 Ki 9:10, #36-2 Ki 8:3, #37-2 Ki 18:10, #73-Eze 3:16, & #81-Eze 39:14:)

Of those 27 instances all but four (##2, 40, 41, 42) are using the prefix mem- (as do also all of said 10 added instances,) while two (#40-2Chr 18:2 & #42-Neh 13:6) are using the prefix lamed- and one (#41-2Chr 21:15) is using the definite article he-. #2-Gen 6:13 stands alone without any prefix whatsoever. The prefix lamed- means ‘to’ or ‘towards’ which usage I find support for in the otherwise somewhat complex chronology context of #40, while fitting also the chronology context re #42. In #41 there is also a lamed- prefix though placed before another word than ‘ketz.’ Thus, #41 parallels, and is very similar to, #40.

The 23 instances using the prefix mem- (meaning ‘from’ or ‘after’) are all consistent with the meaning ‘after a point in time marking the beginning of…’ (cf. #1-Gen 4:3, #4-Gen 8:6, #5-Gen 16:3, #6-Gen 41:1, #8-Exo 12:41, #13-Num 13:25, #15-Deu 9:11, #18-Deu 15:1, #21-Deu 31:10, #29-Jdg 11:39, #30-2Sam 14:26, #31-2Sam 15:7, #33-1Ki 2:39, #35-1Ki 17:7, #39-2Chr 8:1, #43-Est 2:12, #60-Isa 23:15, #61-Isa 23:17, #66-Jer 13:6, #68-Jer 34:14, #69-Jer 42:7, #70-Jer 50:26, #79-Eze 29:13.)

Which brings us to the question re whether the word ‘ketz’ should be understood as it is almost consistently in KJV, i.e. as pointing in every instance to the very end point of time, or else, whether it follows a consistent Scriptural pattern of giving priority to beginnings and to name things pertaining to those same beginnings.

A special point in case is posed re events tied somehow to a Sabbath, whether a Sabbath day or a Sabbatical year. Two passages in Deuteronomy (#18-Deu 15:1 & #21-Deu 31:10) are translated in KJV to the effect that a most direct reading of those passages indicates that slaves are to be released “At the end of every seven years,”which when taken in the context of the Hebrew prefix mem- could easily be misunderstood as indicating after, and not before, the very end of the seventh year. However, upon considering carefully Jeremiah 34:14 (#68) it becomes clear that per Scriptural usage the Seventh-day Sabbath, as well as every seventh year, is to be considered, as a whole, a marker and a sign of something being completed. Thus, the completion of a period of seven days/years (plural) begins with the beginning of the corresponding seventh Day/year, and it is not being reckoned from the very end of that seventh Day/year.

The same applies to any of God’s special Sabbaths, for instance re Yom Kippur, the Day of At-One-Meant as apparently indicated in Jeremiah 42:7 (#69.)

This special case re Sabbath periods makes it clear that the plural specifier (years, days, summers etc.,) when used with the word ‘ketz’ fits a reading such that ‘kets,’ ‘the cut-off boundary,’ applies to the numbered cut-off point within any period of time, i.e. not to the time specifier per se, i.e. not to ‘years,’ ‘days,’ etc.. In this context it must necessarily be remembered that the Scriptures consistently uses accession time, not only re the regnal years of kings, but re all reckoning of time whether days, months, or years etc.. Thus, Hebrew words to the effect of ‘2 ketz’ or ’10 ketz’ are being used for pointing to the beginnings of the 2nd and 10th period of time indicated. The nine prime examples of such plural time specifiers are #5-Gen 16:3, #6-Gen 41:1, #18-Deu 15:1, #21-Deu 31:10, #29-Jdg 11:39, #33-1Ki 2:39, #41-2Chr 21:19, #68-Jer 34:14, #69-Jer 42:7.

When the time indicators are given in the singular case, e.g. ‘shanah’ (year) or ‘jom’ (day,) it should be easy to understand that the word ‘ketz’ points to the beginning of such a singular time period. The eight examples of this usage are #4-Gen 8:6, #8-Exo 12:41, #13-Num 13:25, #15-Deu 9:11, #31-2Sam 15:7, #39-2Chr 8:1, #60-Isa 23:15, & #61-Isa 23:17.

It should be noted that the Hebrew ‘jamim’ should not be perceived as a synonym for ‘years’ where otherwise apparently appropriate, but that ‘jamim’ means what it should mean, i.e. ‘hot days’ in the plural, i.e. the hot season, and that when used with ‘ketz’ the point of the beginning of the hot season is indicated, i.e. spring, aviv, the end of the rain season and winter, and the beginning of the season when kings go to war.

Somewhat unique time specifiers are found in #1-Gen 4:3) ”beginning of the hot season,” #2-Gen 6:13) “a cut-off [or ‘an end’] of all flesh,”#30-2Sam 14:26) “the days towards the hot season,#35-1Ki 17:7) “the beginning of the hot season,#40-2Chr 18:2) “towards the cut-off of Ahab’s years,#42-Neh 13:6) “towards the time marking the hot season,#43-Est 2:12) “after the cut-off period existing for her per the royal edict of twelve months for the preparation of young women,” and #66-Jer 13:6) “after the beginning of many hot days.

Study particulars re H7093 קץetc. as found in 97 Scripture passages:

1. (1st Scripture passage)

 Gen 4:3  ויהי מקץ ימים

Gen 4:3 KJV  And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

Gen 4:3 TLT  And after the boundary of time marking the beginning of the hot season it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.

TLT comment: Cf. the aviv and HagHaOmer, the sacrifice of the wave offering, which is also the time when the lambs are being delivered. Cf. also the common Swedish expression re age: “vårar,” i.e. so many springs. Notice also the similarity between “vår” (spring) and ”år” (year.)

2. (2nd Scripture passage)

 Gen 6:13  ויאמר אלהים לנח קץ כל־בשׂר בא לפני

Gen 6:13 KJV  And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me;

Gen 6:13 TLT  And God said unto Noah, A cut-off [or ‘an end’] of all flesh is come before me;

TLT comment: Notice that the word ‘kets’ is here applied at a point of time prior to the completion of the event specified, i.e. at a point of time marking its beginning, not its end.

3.

 Gen 8:3  וישׁבו המים מעל הארץ הלוך ושׁוב ויחסרו המים מקצה חמשׁים ומאת יום׃

Gen 8:3 KJV  And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

Gen 8:3 TLT  And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the point in time marking the beginning of the hundred and fiftieth day the waters were abated.

4.

 Gen 8:6  ויהי מקץ ארבעים יום

Gen 8:6 KJV  And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:

Gen 8:6 TLT  And it came to pass after the point in time marking the beginning of day forty, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:

TLT comment: Notice that ‘jom’ is in the singular!

5.

 Gen 16:3  ותקח שׂרי אשׁת־אברם את־הגר המצרית שׁפחתה מקץ עשׂר שׁנים לשׁבת אברם בארץ כנען

Gen 16:3  And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

TLT comment: Notice that ‘jom’ is in the plural and that that plural is given as having reached towards that which follows, i.e. towards Abram being in Canaan! Thus, having left for Canaan in an accession year, after the beginning of the tenth year following that accession year, the event portrayed in Genesis 16:3 took place.

6.

 Gen 41:1  ויהי מקץ שׁנתים ימים

Gen 41:1 KJV  And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

Gen 41:1 TLT  And it came to pass after the point in time marking the beginning of the second hot season, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.

TLT comment: Cf. again the common Swedish expression used re age: “vårar,” i.e. so many springs old. Notice also the similarity between “vårand ”år.”

7.

 Gen 47:21  ואת־העם העביר אתו לערים מקצה גבול־מצרים ועד־קצהו׃

Gen 47:21 KJV  And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.

Gen 47:21 TLT  And as for the people, he removed them to cities from the boundary of Egypt territory even to the beginning of [any that remained] theirs.

8.

 Exo 12:41  ויהי מקץ שׁלשׁים שׁנה וארבע מאות שׁנה

Exo 12:41 KJV  And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

Exo 12:41 TLT  And it came to pass after the point in time marking the beginning of year four hundred and thirty, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

TLT comment: Remember that the calendar year of the initiating event, is an accession year prior to the first of the 430 years!

9.

 Exo 25:19  ועשׂה כרוב אחד מקצה מזה וכרוב־אחד מקצה מזה מן־הכפרת תעשׂו את־הכרבים על־שׁני קצותיו׃

Exo 25:19 KJV  And make one cherub on the one end, and the other cherub on the other end: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two ends thereof.

Exo 25:19 TLT  And make one cherub on the one edge, and the other cherub on the one edge: even of the mercy seat shall ye make the cherubims on the two edges thereof.

10.

 Exo 26:4  ועשׂית ללאת תכלת על שׂפת היריעה האחת מקצה בחברת וכן תעשׂה בשׂפת היריעה הקיצונה במחברת השׁנית׃

Exo 26:4 KJV  And thou shalt make loops of blue upon the edge of the one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling; and likewise shalt thou make in the uttermost edge of another curtain, in the coupling of the second.

11.

 Exo 36:11  ויעשׂ ללאת תכלת על שׂפת היריעה האחת מקצה במחברת כן עשׂה בשׂפת היריעה הקיצונה במחברת השׁנית׃

Exo 36:11 KJV  And he made loops of blue on the edge of one curtain from the selvedge in the coupling: likewise he made in the uttermost side of another curtain, in the coupling of the second.

12.

 Exo 37:8  כרוב־אחד מקצה מזה וכרוב־אחד מקצה מזה מן־הכפרת עשׂה את־הכרבים משׁני קצוותו׃

Exo 37:8 KJV  One cherub on the end on this side, and another cherub on the other end on that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two ends thereof.

Exo 37:8 TLT  One cherub on the edge on this side, and another cherub on the other edge on that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two edges thereof.

13.

 Num 13:25  וישׁבו מתור הארץ מקץ ארבעים יום׃

Num 13:25 KJV  And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

Num 13:25 TLT  And they returned from searching of the land after the point in time marking the beginning of day forty.

14.

 Num 34:3  והיה לכם פאת־נגב ממדבר־צן על־ידי אדום והיה לכם גבול נגב מקצה ים־המלח קדמה׃

Num 34:3 KJV  Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the outmost coast of the salt sea eastward:

Num 34:3 TLT  Then your south quarter shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the coast of Edom, and your south border shall be the coast of the salt sea at the front of it:

15.

 Deu 9:11  ויהי מקץ ארבעים יום וארבעים לילה

Deu 9:11 KJV  And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

Deu 9:11 TLT  And it came to pass after the point in time marking the beginning of day forty and night forty, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant.

TLT comment: Notice that this tells us more re the beginning point of reckoning, i.e. the point in time when Moses went up into the mount, than it does re the point of time of his return. That is, given that the 24 hour Scriptural day begins at sunset, the 40th day began at sunset whether or not the 40th night is mentioned. However, given that the 40th night is mentioned, the accession time, i.e. the point of beginning, must have been reckoned from an hour of the night, i.e. lest we should have had to place the point in time indicated in Deuteronomy 9:11 during the hours of the day, which however cannot be a consideration given the Scriptural reckoning of time provided in this passage where day is recorded prior to night and where both day and night are being referenced. It follows that Moses went began his sojourn into the mount during the dark hours (the accession time) such that the first day and first night being referenced include a 24 hour period beginning at sunrise, and not, as by default, beginning at sunset. Thus Moses’ return occurred at night time also, i.e. “after the point in time marking the beginning of… night forty.

16.

Deu 13:7  (13:8) מאלהי העמים אשׁר סביבתיכם הקרבים אליך או הרחקים ממך מקצה הארץ ועד־קצה הארץ׃

Deu 13:7 KJV  Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth;

Deu 13:7 TLT  Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one boundary of the earth unto another boundary of the earth;

17.

 Deu 14:28  מקצה שׁלשׁ שׁנים תוציא את־כל־מעשׂר תבואתך בשׁנה ההוא והנחת בשׁעריך׃

Deu 14:28 KJV  At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:

Deu 14:28 TLT  From the beginning of year three thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:

TLT comment: Notice how that this makes sense after the Sabbath year and two initial years of getting things going again!

18.

 Deu 15:1  מקץ שׁבע־שׁנים תעשׂה שׁמטה׃

Deu 15:1 KJV  At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release.

Deu 15:1 TLT  After a point in time marking seven years thou shalt make a release.

TLT comment: Cf. the note to the next passage, Deu 31:10, and also Jeremiah 34:14 below!

19.

 Deu 28:49  ישׂא יהוה עליך גוי מרחק מקצה הארץ כאשׁר ידאה הנשׁר גוי אשׁר לא־תשׁמע לשׁנו׃

Deu 28:49 KJV  The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;

Deu 28:49 TLT  The LORD shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the foremost point of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand;

TLT comment: Doesn’t the TLT translation make a lot more sense! Or isn’t it only natural that the powers that be constitutes the source of power and the beginning of the powers of the earth?

20.

 Deu 28:64  והפיצך יהוה בכל־העמים מקצה הארץ ועד־קצה הארץ ועבדת שׁם אלהים אחרים אשׁר לא־ידעת אתה ואבתיך עץ ואבן׃

Deu 28:64 KJV  And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.

Deu 28:64 TLT  And the LORD shall scatter thee among all people, from the foremost point the earth even unto the limit of the earth; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.

TLT comment: Doesn’t it only make sense for this to happen when the principles necessary for being the foremost people are not being followed?!

21.

 Deu 31:10  ויצו משׁה אותם לאמר מקץ שׁבע שׁנים במעד שׁנת השׁמטה בחג הסכות׃

Deu 31:10 KJV  And Moses commanded them, saying, At the end of every seven years, in the solemnity of the year of release, in the feast of tabernacles,

Deu 31:10 TLT  And Moses commanded them, saying, From a point in time marking a beginning of seven years; in a festival of the year of release; even within the feast of tabernacles during which time the moon is beginning to wane; that is, at the very earliest beginnings of the seventh year.

TLT comment: Notice that in these last two passages, #9 & 10, ‘shanat,’ ‘year,’ is given in the plural. I had expected the singular for consistency. But not so. What lesson do I see in this? Well, for one, the Seventh-day Sabbath is given as a sign, as a marker. That is, all of it. Consider whether or not this isn’t very much in the spirit of Isaiah 58, which is using the term “an acceptable day of the Lord” (v. 5) while emphasizing the nature of that day by the words “If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord…” (v. 13.) Thus also the entirety of the seventh year is a marker of the completion of the cycle of seven years, not only the end of it, and certainly not the year following it – just the same as Sunday is not a Scriptural Shabbat. Cf. also Jeremiah 34:14 below and my End of the Year study!

22.

 Jos 3:2  ויהי מקצה שׁלשׁת ימים ויעברו השׁטרים בקרב המחנה׃

Jos 3:2 KJV  And it came to pass after three days, that the officers went through the host;

Jos 3:2 TLT  And it came to pass after the beginning of number Three of seven days, that the officers went through the host;

23.

 Jos 9:16  ויהי מקצה שׁלשׁת ימים אחרי אשׁר־כרתו להם ברית וישׁמעו כי־קרבים הם אליו ובקרבו הם ישׁבים׃

Jos 9:16 TLT  And it came to pass after the beginning of number Three of seven days; after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

TLT memo: See footnote![2]

 2Ki 18:10  וילכדה מקצה שׁלשׁ שׁנים בשׁנת־שׁשׁ לחזקיה היא שׁנת־תשׁע להושׁע מלך ישׂראל נלכדה שׁמרון׃

2Ki 18:10 KJV And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

2Ki 18:10 TLT And after the point in time marking the beginning of year three they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

TLT comment: This is a very interesting and somewhat unusual passage in that here reference is not given to the years of any pre-existing calendar, but to the years of siege. By comparing 2 Kings 18, verses 9 and 10, it becomes obvious that there is no way for three full years to fit any which way into the time allotted by these verses. Much less so, if we use the standard Scriptural method of accession year reckoning. However, recognizing that this is an instance of exact day reckoning based upon the beginning of the siege and that here reference is given to the 3rd year, not yet completed, we find a perfect and meaningful solution. That is, the 1st day of the 1st year of siege began sometime within the 4th year of Hezekiah and within the 7th year of Hoshea; the 1st day of the 2nd year of siege began sometime within the 5th year of Hezekiah and within the 8th year of Hoshea; the 1st day of the 3rd year of siege began sometime within the 6th year of Hezekiah and within the 9th year of Hoshea.

Notice in particular that accordingly we find, even within this passage, in and of itself, even without reference to any other particular chronological reckoning, proof in support of the meaning of the word “קצ” as presented within this study!

 2Ki 19:23  ביד מלאכיך חרפת אדני ותאמר ברכב רכבי אני עליתי מרום הרים ירכתי לבנון ואכרת קומת ארזיו מבחור ברשׁיו ואבואה מלון קצה יער כרמלו׃

2Ki 19:23  By thy messengers thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedar trees thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the lodgings of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.

TLT comment: Notice the parallel with time boundaries: Here reference is given to a point beyond the boundary of entry, not beyond the boundary of exit!

 2Ch 18:2  וירד לקץ שׁנים אל־אחאב

2Ch 18:2 KJV  And after certain years he went down to Ahab to Samaria. And Ahab killed sheep and oxen for him in abundance, and for the people that he had with him, and persuaded him to go up with him to Ramothgilead.

2Ch 18:2 TLT  And he descended towards the cut-off of Ahab’s years towards Samaria. And Ahab killed sheep and oxen for him in abundance, and for the people that he had with him, and persuaded him to go up with him to Ramothgilead.

TLT comment: Notice carefully how that, although the reference is towards the ending boundary of someone’s reign, someone still alive and reigning, the prefix mem- [after] is not being used, rather it is the prefix lamed- [towards] that is used!

Notice also that Ahab reigned 22 years in Israel (1 Kings 16:29.) Based on the clear context 2 Chronicles 18 is as a whole a record of the final events of Ahab, those intimately associated with his death. Looking at the words “לקץ שׁנים”alone I would have preferred a translation such as “towards the beginning of year two…,” however, not only does the context make it entirely clear that this cannot be, but also the surrounding words, before and after, make it clear that we are looking instead at the ending boundary of the years of Ahab and towards he cut-off of his life as a whole.

 2Ch 21:15  ואתה בחליים רבים במחלה מעיך עד־יצאו מעיך מן־החלי ימים על־ימים׃

2Ch 21:19 KJV  And it came to pass, that in process of time, after the end of two years, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of sore diseases. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.

2Ch 21:15  TLT  And thou shalt have great calamities including disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the calamity in days towards the hot season.

2Ch 21:19 TLT  And it came to pass, that towards the days of summer, at the time when was to come about the boundary marking the second hot season of Ahaziah, king of Judah, his bowels fell out by reason of his sickness: so he died of a grievous evil. And his people made no burning for him, like the burning of his fathers.

 Est 2:12  ובהגיע תר נערה ונערה לבוא אל־המלך אחשׁורושׁ מקץ היות לה כדת הנשׁים שׁנים עשׂר חדשׁ

Est 2:12 KJV  Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)

Est 2:12 TLT  Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after the cut-off period existing for her per the royal edict of twelve months for the preparation of young women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)

TLT comment: Notice that, although reference is not here given to the beginning of a certain period of time, i.e. twelve months, the boundary reference is very carefully specified, i.e. the twelve months as a whole are being perceived as a boundary line of preparation in and of themselves. Thus, reference is given here to the end of that whole twelve months long boundary of preparation.

Job 22:5 KJV  Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite?

Job 22:5 TLT Is not thy wickedness great? and without any cut-off or boundary thine iniquities?

TLT comment: Notice the implied state of origin applicable to this passage! If the original state is nothingness and imperfection, i.e. wickedness and iniquity, then there can be no beginning, or entry, boundary only a boundary of exit. Notice then who the speaker is: Eliphaz the Temanite. Does this tell us something about the origin of the concept of “original sin?” On the other hand, what does the concept of darkness always preceding light, as taught us by God’s own reckoning of time, teach us about the concepts of “perfection,” “sanctification,” and “righteousness by faith?”

TLT comment:
This TLT translation is based upon the Hebrew text alone as understood from the above word study and before having found any certain and immediate correlation in history. The SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 4, p. 866 re Daniel 11:6 is interpreting this verse in terms of the marriage between Antiochus II Theos (261-246 B.C.) and Berenice and seems to conclude, per the wording of KJV, that said marriage took place towards the end of Antiochus II’s reign. Other sources date said marriage to 261 B.C. (cf. Wikipedia,) 252 B.C. (cf. livius.org and this link,) or about 250 B.C. (cf. Encyclopedia Britannica, 11 Ed..) Accordingly, it seems possible to apply this TLT translation also upon this same marriage and to the 2nd year of Antiochus II’s reign. If it is correct (cf. livius.org) that Antiochus II’s reign began June 2, 261 B.C., then, 1) per the Egyptian calendar his 2nd year of reign would have begun at sunrise Thoth 1 (October 27,) 261 B.C.; 2) per the Babylonian calendar his 2nd year of reign would have begun at the sunset beginning Nisanu 1, 259 B.C.; and 3) per the Scripture calendar his 2nd year would have begun with Tishri 22, 260 B.C..

Dan 11:13 TLT For the king of the north shall return, and shall set forth a multitude greater than the former, and, towards the points in time marking beginnings of year two, shall certainly come with a great army and with much riches.

TLT comment: This TLT translation is based upon the Hebrew text alone as understood from the above word study and before having found any certain and immediate correlation in history.

The SDA Bible Commentary, Vol. 4, p. 868 re Daniel 11:13 is interpreting this verse in terms of “Antiochus III, the Great (223-187 B.C.)” (p. 867) [the king of the north] and his “avenging himself upon the Egyptians… in 201 B.C. [when] he invaded Palestine again,” at which time Egypt was being ruled by a six or seven year old child by the name “Ptolemy V Epiphanes (203-181 B.C.)” (p. 868.) If that is a valid application of this Bible passage, then year two of Daniel 11:13 TLT could well apply to Ptolemy V’s 2nd year of reign.

If it is correct (cf. livius.org) that Ptolemy V’s reign began November 29, 205 B.C., when he became “co-ruler,” then, 1) per the Egyptian calendar his 2nd year of reign would have begun at sunrise Thoth 1 (October 13,) 204 B.C.; 2) per the Babylonian calendar his 2nd year of reign would have begun at the sunset beginning Nisanu 1, 203 B.C.; and 3) per the Scripture calendar his 2nd year would have begun with Tishri 22, 203 B.C..

Alternatively, if it is correct (cf. livius.org) that Ptolemy V’s reign began July or August, 204 B.C., when Ptolemy IV Philopator died, then, 1) per the Egyptian calendar his 2nd year of reign would have begun at sunrise Thoth 1 (October 13,) 204 B.C.; 2) per the Babylonian calendar his 2nd year of reign would have begun at the sunset beginning Nisanu 1, 202 B.C.; and 3) per the Scripture calendar his 2nd year would have begun with Tishri 22, 203 B.C., i.e. item 2) alone would be different.

Furthermore, if the event of Daniel 11:13 applies to “the Fifth Syrian War [May] 202-195” (cf. livius.org) then this would fit nicely with either the latter alternative re the Babylonian calendar (cf. last prior paragraph,) or, in either case (cf. last two prior paragraphs,) with the Scriptural calendar, but not with the Egyptian calendar.

This finding is in line with my prior contention that the Book of Daniel is using the Scriptural calendar by default.

[1] The following is a memo of a past step on my learning curve while working on my article “When was Jordan Crossed?”, errors and all. It is based upon a false assumption that the Book of Joshua is at times giving reference to a second set of three days within one and the same week. I discovered my error while writing the Notice section within said article “When was Jordan Crossed?”:

After a more in depth study of the first five chapters of Joshua, I find what seems to be an inescapable and, together with Joshua 9:16, quite uniqueFootnote reference to two sets of three days before the Sabbath. As follows:

Jos 3:2 TLT  And it came to pass after the beginning of the next Third Day of the week, that the officers went through the host;

Footnote: The phrase “מקצה שׁלשׁת ימים” is found only twice in the Bible: Joshua 3:2 and Joshua 9:16. Please notice that the KJV translation, “after three days,” precludes a translation of Joshua 9:16-17 in terms of “tree days” (v. 16) and “third day” (v. 17) being references to the same Third Day of the week. If both of those verses, Joshua 9:16 & 17, were, in actual fact, to be references to the Third Day of the week, then they would have to be placed in two separate weeks… Unless, of course, the within study re the meaning of the word “קצ” is correct in indicating that “קצ” is pointing to the beginning and not to the end of a thing. But if that is true, then Joshua 1:11, 2:22, & 3:2 cannot all point to the Third Day of the week, unless reference is being made to two sets of three days within one and the same week. But all these arguments are really superfluous. The Hebrew original is using the dual grammatical form of the word translated “three.”

Cf. my comment under Joshua 3:2 above! The correct translation seems to be:

Jos 9:16 TLT  And it came to pass after the point in time marking the beginning of the second set of three days in the week after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.
