Why Two Different ‘Yom Rishon’ in the Feast of Unleavened Bread?

What is the True Meaning of the Hebrew Word ‘Rishon?’

Abstract:

The below findings are the results of a raw study with the objective of better understanding the naming of the various days in the Feast of Unleavened Bread, especially considering the two different names being used in Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew, Chapter 26:17 & Chapter 28:1, both of which begin with the words yom rishon…

Matthew 26:17 STHM “חג המצות וביום הראשון של” or “VeBeYom HaRishon Shel Chag HaMatsot” meaning literally:

Matthew 26:17 TLT “And in the foremost [the beginning, the initial] day of the feast of the commandments…”

Matthew 28:1 STHM “וביום הראשון מהשבוע בהשׁכמה” or “VeBeYom HaRishon MeHaShevoa Be HaShekemah

” meaning literally:

Matthew 28:1 TLT ”And in the foremost day out of the seven [days of the feast] near its head [near its beginning; nightfall; the time when the shadows are rising…]”

In the end it became clear to me that the Hebrew word ‘rishon’ is not primarily a number designating order, as is ‘echad,’ but that it, ‘rishon,’ is instead primarily a word indicating value, importance, priority, beginnings, etc.. Cf. the Hebrew word ‘ראשׁ’ meaning ‘head’ (Strong’s H7217-7218.)Accordingly, it appears, that is, from the context, as though the First and the Seventh Days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread are both, in the above quoted passages, being indicated by the use of the word ‘rishon;’ however, using different words to follow, that is, for the purpose of indicating in what respect each of these respective days are ‘ראשון,’ ’foremost.’

But why not making your own Scripture word study to find out for yourself? It is very easy even when you don’t know Hebrew at all! Just use your e-Sword etc. for finding the first instance in the Scriptures of the word you are studying, e.g. ‘rishon’ or ‘H7225.’ Then read the context of the passage where the word is found to see what the obvious and necessary meaning of the word is. Compare this with Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary and the roots there provided for the Hebrew word. After this, you may wish to expand your study by comparing additional instances of the Hebrew word in the Scriptures. Voila, you’re an expert already!

Below you’ll see how I did my word study in this instance… a slight variation on the above perhaps…

1. Searching OT for instances of the names indicated in Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew 26:17 & 28:1:

None using echad 259 or rishon 7223 plus 7620 3117

The number two plus day plus seven:

None using 8145 or 8147 plus 7620 3117

using 7969 7620 3117 I find:

Neh 13:31 And for the wood⁶⁰⁸⁶ offering,⁷¹³³ at times⁶²⁵⁶ appointed,²¹⁶³ and for the firstfruits.¹⁰⁶¹ Remember²¹⁴² me, O my God,⁴³⁰ for good.²⁸⁹⁶

Nah 3:12 All³⁶⁰⁵ thy strongholds⁴⁰¹³ shall be like fig trees⁸³⁸⁴ with⁵⁹⁷³ the firstripe figs:¹⁰⁶¹ if⁵¹⁸ they be shaken,⁵¹²⁸ they shall even fall⁵³⁰⁷ into⁵⁹²¹ the mouth⁶³¹⁰ of the eater.³⁹⁸

Lev 23:9 And the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ spoke¹⁶⁹⁶ unto⁴¹³ Moses,⁴⁸⁷² saying,⁵⁵⁹

Lev 23:10 Speak¹⁶⁹⁶ unto⁴¹³ the children¹¹²¹ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ and say⁵⁵⁹ unto⁴¹³ them, When³⁵⁸⁸ ye be come⁹³⁵ into⁴¹³ the land⁷⁷⁶ which⁸³⁴ I⁵⁸⁹ give⁵⁴¹⁴ unto you, and shall reap^{7114 (853)} the harvest⁷¹⁰⁵ thereof, then ye shall bring^{935 (853)} a sheaf⁶⁰¹⁶ of the firstfruits⁷²²⁵ of your harvest⁷¹⁰⁵ unto⁴¹³ the priest:³⁵⁴⁸

Lev 23:11 And he shall wave^{5130 (853)} the sheaf⁶⁰¹⁶ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ to be accepted⁷⁵²² for you: on the morrow^{4480, 4283} after the sabbath⁷⁶⁷⁶ the priest³⁵⁴⁸ shall wave⁵¹³⁰ it.

The word rishon 7225. Means most important, best, chief, foremost, beginning, choice, etc.. Not the same as number one, echad! A sampling:

Gen 1:1 In the beginning⁷²²⁵ God⁴³⁰ created^{1254 (853)} the heaven⁸⁰⁶⁴ and the earth.⁷⁷⁶

Gen 10:10 And the beginning⁷²²⁵ of his kingdom⁴⁴⁶⁷ was¹⁹⁶¹ Babel,⁸⁹⁴ and Erech,⁷⁵¹ and Accad,³⁹⁰ and Calneh,³⁶⁴¹ in the land⁷⁷⁶ of Shinar.⁸¹⁵²

Gen 49:3 Reuben,⁷²⁰⁵ thou⁸⁵⁹ art my firstborn,¹⁰⁶⁰ my might,³⁵⁸¹ and the beginning⁷²²⁵ of my strength,²⁰² the excellency³⁴⁹⁹ of dignity,⁷⁶¹³ and the excellency³⁴⁹⁹ of power:⁵⁷⁹⁴

Exo 23:19 The first⁷²²⁵ of the firstfruits¹⁰⁶¹ of thy land¹²⁷ thou shalt bring⁹³⁵ into the house¹⁰⁰⁴ of the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ thy God.⁴³⁰ Thou shalt not³⁸⁰⁸ seethe¹³¹⁰ a kid¹⁴²³ in his mother's⁵¹⁷ milk.²⁴⁶¹

Lev 2:12 As for the oblation⁷¹³³ of the firstfruits,⁷²²⁵ ye shall offer⁷¹²⁶ them unto the LORD:³⁰⁶⁸ but they shall not³⁸⁰⁸ be burnt⁵⁹²⁷ on⁴¹³ the altar⁴¹⁹⁶ for a sweet⁵²⁰⁷ savor.⁷³⁸¹

Deu 18:4 The firstfruit⁷²²⁵ also of thy corn,¹⁷¹⁵ of thy wine,⁸⁴⁹² and of thine oil,³³²³ and the first⁷²²⁵ of the fleece¹⁴⁸⁸ of thy sheep,⁶⁶²⁹ shalt thou give⁵⁴¹⁴ him.
