Exactly Does the Hebrew Word “שבוע” (Strong’s H7620) Mean?

Abstract:
This article is a study in pursuit of a more correct answer to the questions asked within the following email dialog [dated in March and April, 2016:]

Me: And which “Hebrew word
for ‘week’ “ might you thus be referring to? I am not aware that there truly is
one, are you?

R: Around 150BC 70 Hebrew scholars translated the
Old Testament into Greek. Today that work is known as the Septuagint or LXX
manuscripts. In those manuscripts we find the Greek word "hebdomas" used
as the direct translation of the Hebrew word "shabua"
(H7620). In our English translations of the Old Testament we find the
word "week" used 16 times as a direct translation of the Hebrew word
"shabua"…
After
carefully considering the meaning of all the instances of H7620 in the original
Hebrew text, I find that I may safely conclude that in no instance is “the
Hebrew word ‘shabua’ (H7620)…” accurately translated in terms of the English
concept expressed by means of the English word “week.”
It
should be remembered also that the Greek word used in the LXX translation
(Strong’s G1442) is first and foremost a word meaning “seventh,” not ‘week’ as
translated in KJV! Thus the error is in the eyes of the beholders (not
excluding the translators) of the LXX, not necessarily in the LXX itself!
However,
given the many years of the accumulated errors of the powers prophesied in
Daniel 7:25, I find it easy to see that not many are going to be easily motivated
to do the in depth studying of these particulars that may be necessary. That
is, in order to convince most anyone that the current traditional understanding
of the above referenced 16 passages of “our English translations” (specifically
KJV) are in a dire need of revision.
Considerations:
Doing
my own search, using E-Sword, I did find the above said 16 instances of “week,”
that is, 19 hits in 16 verses within KJV. Searching HOT+ [Hebrew Old Testament
with Strong’s numbers] for “H7620,” I got 20 hits in 17 verses corresponding to
those same 16 hits of KJV, plus one (1) more, Ezekiel 45:21.
Ezekiel
45:21, item #11 of the 17 instances of H7620, is using the very same H7620 (in
the feminine plural form of that Hebrew word) while specifying a certain set of
seven days that is not tied to the regular week. In this passage, Ezekiel
45:21, I find H7620 translated into English (KJV) as the word “seven” within the phrase “the passover,
a feast of seven days; unleavened...” The seven days of the Feast of
Unleavened Bread are not tied to the regular “week,” but rather to days 15
through 21 of Month One of the Scripture year. That is, beginning at the end of
the 14th day of that lunar based month, which month begins at the
time when the New Moon crescent is first observed at Jerusalem. Accordingly, I
find it quite clear that H7620 is by no means exclusively tied to that seven-day
week, which is generally understood by the word ‘week’ as commonly used in the
English language. True, there are exceptions for how the English word ‘week’ is
being applied, but nevertheless, I do not find H7620 being a perfect synonym
for the English word ‘week.’ ‘Seven,’ as translated in Ezekiel 45:21 KJV, seems
a much more accurate translation. At least to me.
Likewise,
the use of H7620 within Genesis 29:27, 28 (items #1 and #2 of 17) is not
necessarily tied to the regular week, but may well be a reference either to a
seven day period correlated to the seven day Feast of Tabernacles, which
traditionally have been a most popular time for wedding among the Jews, or else
to any other set of seven days defined by or for that wedding of Leah.
In
Exodus 34:22 (item #3 of 17,) I find H7620 translated in KJV as “weeks” within
the term “the feast of weeks.” Unfortunately, the term “the feast of weeks” is
a bad translation from the Hebrew. A much more correct translation is “the
feast of Sevenths.” That is, said term is a reference to the Scriptural ‘Day of
Pentecost,’ which day is clearly enough defined in the Scriptures as the
seventh Seventh Day Shabbat following the Waving of the Sheaf sacrifice. Thus,
the Scriptural Pentecost was designed originally as an annual celebration of
the Creator’s Seventh Day Shabbat. That is, in commemoration of the very first
Seventh Day Sabbath at the end of the seven days. And, in commemoration of our
Creator and of the creation as recorded in Genesis One and Two. The Waving of
the Sheaf sacrifice is clearly enough defined in the Scriptures as being
brought “on the morrow” following the beginning of the [regular weekly] Seventh
Day Shabbat within the Feast of Unleavened Bread. That being the case, using
the English word ‘week’ in the context of Exodus 34:22, is quite misleading to
say the least. The Hebrew word H7620 is here clearly used while focusing upon
the one Seventh Day within the seven day long week. That is, while not focusing
upon the entire seven day long week beginning with the First Day at sunset on a
Saturday evening. For a more comprehensive study of the

In
Leviticus 12:5, (item #4 of 17,) I find H7620 translated in KJV as “two weeks.”
If this time period was intended to reference the first 14 days following
delivery, then I find it strange that the usual Hebrew language for the number
14 is not being used. Again, the emphasis is upon two sevenths. That is, as in “sevening
[being cleansed; being sanctified; being perfected; being holy]” and as
in “sanctifying the Seventh Day Sabbath” (cf. Exodus 20:8, 11;
Deuteronomy 5:12.) That is, whether or not pointing to said Seventh Day Sabbath.
Using the English word ‘week’ is very much obscuring this concept from the view
of a non-Hebrew Bible student.
In
Numbers 28:26, (item #5 of 17,) I find H7620 translated as “after your weeks be
out” (KJV,) and in reference to “the day of the first fruits,” which day is
obviously in reference to a day within the Feast of Unleavened Bread. However,
I see nothing in the Hebrew text in support of the translated words “after” and/or
“be out.” On the contrary, the word used in the Hebrew text may be
literally translated “in your sevens.” Considering carefully the clear
definition found in Leviticus 23:11, the Waving of the Sheaf sacrifice is being
brought “on the morrow after [the beginning of] the Seventh Day Shabbat.” That
is, said sacrifice is to be brought on the morrow after the beginning of the
day of the first fruits [which day begins at sunset on Friday evening.]
Beginning after that Sabbath event on Sabbath number 1 of 8 (or number zero (0)
of 7,) there are the seven weeks of counting the Omer towards “the Day of Sabbaths,”
“towards the Day of Sevenths,” and/or “towards the Day of Pentecost.” Thus,
again, H7620, as used in Numbers 28:26, is very much a word used in honor of
the Creator of said first fruits. Clearly, the KJV translators failed to
understand this concept, which concept then remained obscure, even to this very
day, by most people.
Deuteronomy
16:9 (items #6 of 17,) is dealing with the very same reckoning of Omer, as
discussed under item #5. Once one understands the Hebrew concept of placing the
initiating event in time zero, more commonly familiar in terms of “accession
year” etc., while beginning the numbering (1, 2, 3, etc…) with the next
subsequent unit of time in the Hebrew/Scriptural calendar, it becomes obvious
how these “seven weeks” (KJV) are to be reckoned. That is, seven full sevens of
days following said initiating event on the morrow of the Seventh Day Sabbath
of the preceding week. Once the importance of honoring the Creator of Life, and
the Seventh Day Sabbath originally defined by Him (cf. Genesis 2:1-3) is
clearly understood, then the fog is lifting and the clear meaning of the text
stands out as in bright sun shine and with all the colors of the rainbow. Thus,
once again H7620, is not well represented by the English word ‘week.’
Deuteronomy
16:10, 16; 2 Chronicles 2:13; and Jeremiah 5:24 (items #7 - #10) are all in
reference to KJV’s “feast of weeks,” that is, in reference to “the Day of [the
Seventh Day] Sabbaths,” “Pentecost,” the 50th day of 50 day reckoning
from the beginning of the Waving of the Sheaf Shabbat. Cf. Exodus 34:22 (item
#3 of 17) above!
The
instances of H7620 within Daniel 9:24, 25, 26, 27; 10:2, 3 (items #12-17 of
17,) are all most correctly understood in terms of numbers. Cf. the first 100
slides within my PowerPoint presentation as found under item #15 within my

the Book of Daniel.
Conclusion:
Strong’s
H7620 is not in any instance a word accurately translated in terms of the
English word ‘week.’
