“I våra dagar finns det inte i Amerika något som rätteligen kan kallas en oberoende nyhetsbyrå eller nyhetsmedia. Det vet ni och det vet jag. Om jag tillåter mig att dela med mig av min ärliga åsikt I en enda upplaga av min egen tidning, då kommer jag inom 24 timmar att ha förlorat mitt jobb. Journalistens uppgift och jobb är att förstöra sanningen, att blåljuga, att förvanska, att smutsa ner, att böja sig inför Mammongudens fötter, och att sälja ut sitt land och sin ras i utbyte mot sitt dagliga bröd. Ni vet det och jag vet det. Hur idiotiskt är inte detta hyllande av en oberoende press. Vi är verktyg i händerna på rika män bakom kulisserna. Vi är sprattelgubbarna. In 1953 John Swinton was asked to give a toast before the New York Press Club. After listening to numerous hypocritical toasts to our American free press John Swinton spoke candidly to his journalistic colleagues saying:

“There is no such thing at this date in the world’s history in America as an independent press. You know it and I know it. If I allow my honest opinion to appear in one issue of my paper, before 24 hours my occupation would be gone. The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of Mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it. And what folly is this toasting an independent press. We are tools of the rich men behind the scenes. We are the jumping jacks. They pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities, and our lives are all the property of other men. We are intellectual prostitutes.”
