An attempt to make sense out of Luke 24:21...

What is the “Third Day” Reference of Luke 24:21 All About?

Abstract:

This passage will likely require more work, but presently I do not have access to my reference books, so until I do I’ll have to contend myself with what little I have. Is the reference in this passage pointing to the Third Day of the week, or is this passage expressing a disappointment in regards to a misapplication of the third day on the part of the ones on their way to Emmaus? At the present time it seems to me that the latter option is true:

Luk 24:21 TLT+ But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: in stead mind you,now is completed thatthirdof those days, makingtoday past allthat which was thus began.

Now, if this interpretation is correct, what implications should that have as to our translations generally, i.e. if not even those who were contemporaries understood correctly the meaning of Yeshua’s words re the Third Day? Could it be that we do need a more solid reference frame than that of men?

Could this verse even be read as a prophetic message to our time in re for instance to the common mis-application of “the third day” being a reference to Sunday?

It is certainly anyone’s guess as to what anyone else’s misunderstanding is, isn’t it? The only true and valid reference is the source, and the source here would be the one saying those words. Or, is that not so? But that one is now dead, so unless a specific written explanation by the originator of those words is found, this cannot be known, nor does it matter…

That is, beyond recognizing said fact. However, considering what beginnings might possibly have been considered, i.e. prior to that of the concurrent week, which ones might be likely?: Putting Yeshua in the grave? Taking Yeshua captive? Selling Yeshua for a few silver coins? No matter, by the Third Day of the week, all those other beginnings would have been too early for this particular day to have been properly referenced as the third day, would it not?
