King Saul’s Death

-

Was it Tied to the Total Lunar Eclipse of

January 10, 1043 BCE?

-

This is Being Suggested by Certain Similarities between the Language of the Babylonian Tablet VAT 4956 and that of 1 Samuel 28:13

But How Reliable is the Lunar Path as Retro-Calculated to that Time?

Abstract:

In the beginning of “July 2010,” my Bible began to open up repetitively to the below quoted passages at the end of 1 Samuel and the beginning of 2 Samuel 1. Although I had read these dated passages before, but without being able, at that time, to perceive any certain anchor upon which to tie the reference to “the third day” etc., based upon similar repetitive experiences leading me to valuable results, I now began pursuing these passages systematically and step by step as far as I found it possible to do so…

Today, “July 22, 2010,” I seem possibly to have arrived at a long sought for destination point, that is, a firm astronomical date that may be tied to a dated event near the very beginning of the kingdoms of Judah and Israel, and thus bridging over the gap of uncertainty between the Scriptural dates tied with some certainty to the beginning of Creation as recorded in Genesis 1, at the one end, and on the other end, the even more certain dates being tied to the reign of Nebuchadnezzar and our modern calendars, e.g. the Julian and Gregorian calendars.

My prime question re such a date is whether or not, and to what extent, our modern astronomy software is reliable for events ante-dating the long day of King Zedekiah and other events suggesting inter-planetary catastrophes and interactions such as have been suggested by Immanuel Velikovsky and others. For instance, have there been changes in the paths of the Earth and/or the Moon since the time when King Saul died? If that is not the case, then have there been sudden shifts of the axis of the Earth associated with shifts in latitude of places such as Israel, etc.?

. . . . .

The within study began by identifying the relationship between “the third day” of 1 Samuel 30:1 and “the third day” of 2 Samuel 1:2 and then the “three days” of 1 Samuel 30:13. Then came the question as to the meaning of the Hebrew behind “the seven days” of 1 Samuel 31:13.

While yet considering these issues, my attention was suddenly focused upon the words of that infamous woman of Endor and the dialog between Saul and her. Specifically I was alerted to the word “gods” as used in 1 Samuel 28:13, which words reminded me of my recently learned lesson re the meaning of that same word in the Babylonian clay tablet from Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, VAT 4956. Recognizing the similarity between the Hebrew phrase “I saw gods…” (1 Sam 28:13) and the corresponding Akkadian phrase “one god was seen with the other…” I was alerted to the possibility of these ancient passages referencing very similar events indeed upon the celestial sky. Having learned years ago about the ancient people’s very strong beliefs re eclipses being omens re the comings and goings of rulers and kings, I found more food for thought along these lines. Indeed, it seems clear to me that even Saul, the apostle, was interpreting a total solar eclipse in terms of an encounter with the Lord Yeshua/Jesus himself…. And Saul, the king, certainly wasn’t the only king that outlawed and even killed soothsayers, astrologers, and such others as were promoting the idea that there is a tie between the events upon the celestial sky and the comings and goings of rulers and kings. So did also a number of the early Roman Emperors as they became aware of the impact of such ideas upon the minds of the masses in creating such self-fulfilling prophecies… For them this became very much a matter of life or death and each their own life expectancy!

Well, finding only one likely candidate fitting the constraints of the word of the woman of Endor etc. upon a thorough analysis of all the total and partial lunar eclipses from 1080 BCE through 1000 BCE this line of pursuit became even more interesting.

Along the line I did find support and some confirmation first from the very meaning of the name ‘Endor,’ which seemed to be placed there as a label upon a key for opening the door to a previously hidden exact chronology such as would exactly tie, or match, the Old Testament chronology from Creation through Solomon to the more recent ancient chronology beginning with Nebuchadnezzar’s reign.

Secondly, but more tangibly perhaps, I did find support and confirmation from the time given for David’s stay with the Philistine people, that is, as recorded in 1 Samuel 27:7.

There remains to be seen what further confirmation, or else correction, that the Lord, our Creator, Guide, and Redeemer will send our way…

[Please notice: Since originally writing this article I believe I’ve found powerful evidence for precise correction relative to the within evidence for the eclipse of January 10, 1043 BCE being the date of King Saul’s death. The interested reader may wish to pursue my additional, and corrective, findings under this link, that is, while considering the within article a prelude towards even better things to come…

[This multi paragraph square bracket notice was added on 5924[(*??*)] 08 14 2028 [2011-12-09,] notice the date!, in consequence of a SPACE.com article (dated Dec 9, 2011) re the total lunar eclipse which will begin about 12 hours from the time of this writing, and which eclipse, from the vantage point of portions of the North American continent will be visible at sunrise, that is, such that the full moon, and the lunar eclipse, will be visible simultaneously with the sun. That is, a event very similar indeed to that which is being described by the woman at Endor in response to a specific question posed to her by King Saul on the evening preceding King Saul’s death…

[Considering also the ancient’s commonly held conviction that such events were being tied to the demise of powers that be, that is, kings and emperors of whatever kind that was currently holding the throne, one might be tempted to ask a similar question even today: “Who is the current ruler whose powers, or even life, will be removed from him at this time of the dawn lunar eclipse…?” But, I suppose such questions are delegated today, by most people, unto such as is considered mere superstition… Or might such people as put their faith in horoscopes etc. constitute an exception to this rule?]

. . . . . . .

If indeed the within suggested conclusion is correct, well, then it seems that that most difficult portion of ancient history, the era of the kings of Israel and Judah, is being finally bridged such that our modern calendar reckoning may be exactly and certainly tied to the exact reckoning of the Old Testament from Creation to the end of King Solomon…

Will, this prove true in the end? Is there a way of confirming this discovery even more certainly and in such a way that it may more easily be accepted? Do we now, finally, have an exact date for the beginning of the creation as recorded in Genesis One, that is, in terms of our modern day calendars and reckoning? Is today’s date, “5930± 05 09 2026 [2010-07-22,]” as I used to record it until now, more correctly expressed by a phrase such as this, my most recent revision: “5940(?) 05 09 2026 [2010-07-22]” Only the Creator of Time itself can tell…

Well, I’ll certainly enjoy learning whatever more the Lord of Hosts, my Redeemer and very personal Teacher, will decide to show me henceforth re these particulars…

May the Lord, Yahweh Elohim, be praised for His guidance every step along the way!

Compare those words of the woman with this phrase as found on VAT 4956: “one god was seen with the other: sunrise to moonset: 4°.” This latter phrase upon said Babylonian clay tablet is a phrase used repetitively for recording the first time in the month when in the morning the sun is rising above the eastern horizon before the moon sets shortly thereafter behind the western horizon.

Upon remembering also the exceedingly strong association, prevalent among the ancients, between eclipse events and the demise of whichever ruling king, it becomes only natural to perceive in such an eclipse at this particular time the demise of Saul, king of Israel…

It remains then for us to convince ourselves upon sufficient evidence that such an event did indeed occur at that time… However, if indeed those planetary catastrophes did occur as suggested by Immanuel Velikovsky in the 8th and 9th centuries BCE, how do we know that the path of the moon was not also then disturbed such that our astronomical software become unreliable beyond that point in time?

For starters, let’s look at the time I’ve thus far associated with the end of the reign of Saul and with the beginning of the reign of king David, which year has been until now, (now being “Thursday July 22, 2010,”) 1034± BCE. Going to the NASA Phases of the Moon tables I find the following total lunar eclipses:

1 Samuel 28:25 KJV  And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

The above passages certainly makes it quite clear that Saul and his sons were to die the very next day… That is, they would die within the light and hot portion following immediately upon the night when Saul left the woman in Endor.

1 Samuel 29:11 KJV  So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, to return into the land of the Philistines. And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

Given that Aphek (verse 29:1,) located near Joppa and about half way between Jezreel in the north east and Ziklag in the south, it seems that the time for the two parties, i.e. David vs. the Philistine princes, to travel to their respective destinations, i.e. Ziklag and Jezreel, would be about the same. Considering the distance one may question whether such a distance could be traveled by either party within one day only, that is, within the Second Day of the week, as may seem indicated by these passages of Chapter 29, or else that both parties began their traveling upon the First Day of the week or even earlier, each arriving at their respective destinations upon the Third Day of the week (1 Samuel 30:1.)

Or else, if Aphek is a place located some 5 miles west south west of Endor (Map No 7 of my KJV of Orville Eros,) then the time of travel for David and his men to Ziklag would likely have been considerably longer than for the Philistines to Jezreel, considering the distance from Endor to Ziklag (120 miles as the crow flies,) yet it may be well to remember (1 Samuel 30:10) the exhaustion of the 1/3 of David’s 600 men, who couldn’t make it and who had to stay behind and rest. On the other hand, before arriving to Ziklag and the destruction there discovered, what would have been their incentive for exhausting themselves by a hurried march all that distance?

1 Samuel 30:12 KJV  And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.

1 Samuel 30:13 KJV  And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick.

1 Samuel 30:12 TLT  And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.

1 Samuel 30:13 TLT  And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because on the Third Day I fell sick.

Thus counting, based upon the above given facts, I find that the young man of Egypt fell sick during the dark portion, the night, of the Third Day (v. 13,) and reckoning the first of three days as being the day portion of the Third Day, and the first of three nights as being the night portion of Day Four, that the “three days and three nights” are complete by Friday morning. Thus, this is an event that took place some time during the Day of Preparation, possibly even late afternoon and before that special day of reflection of the events of the week, the Sabbath.

Consistent with the above, re Sabbath, David is here recognized as observing the Sabbath hours before setting out upon his venture against the Amalekites, which venture is here recorded as having occupied most all of the First Day of the week.

Considering the distance (120 mi as the crow flies) from Jezreel to Ziklag (cf. my comments above re 1 Samuel 29:11,) the KJV translation “fasted seven days…” may well be the correct translation, and that, accordingly, the death of Saul and his sons preceded David’s arrival in Ziklag by a number of days…

2 Samuel 1:2 KJV  It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

2 Samuel 1:2 TLT  It came even to pass on the Third Day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

Thus we find that this event took place on the Third Day of the week, and that accordingly, David arrived back to Ziklag on the Second Day of the week. Thus, apparently the camp of the Amalekites was located within less than 48 hours of travel from Ziklag (days #2 and #3.) Thus, also it is clear that this last event occurred one week after David first arrived back in Ziklag on the Third Day and after leaving the Philistines and Aphek some days prior to that, apparently early on Day One, the day when Saul and his sons died. If that is true, then it took them three days or less to travel from Aphek to Ziklag, and the same would likely be true also for the messenger out of the camp of Saul, who should have been able to arrive in Ziklag by the Fourth Day, six days before delivering his report to David. However, the records of the Scriptures seem to bear evidence of the ordinances of Numbers 19:11-12, 14, 16 having been followed. Thus it seems as though the above messenger of Saul’s death observed the seven day cleansing process such that by the end of the Seventh Day of the week (cf. Numbers 19:12 and 1 Sam 31:13) they were all considered clean. Thus, it would follow that this messenger of Saul’s death left Jabesh-Gilead early on Day One, like David exactly one week before him, and that, like David, he also arrived in Ziklag on the Third Day of the week; the traveling distance from Jabesh-Gilead being much the same as the traveling distance from Aphek, 5 miles west of Endor.

It follows then also that Saul’s visit to the woman in Endor took place on the eve of Day One, “Saturday night,” and if there was indeed a lunar eclipse associated with that visit of Saul as discussed above, then, most likely, that eclipse would have occurred in the morning of Day Seven or in the evening of Day One, that is, on a Saturday. If that is true, I find only one solution[1]: That Saturday was January 10, 1043 BCE, king Saul was killed on January 11, 1043 BCE, and the eclipse that the woman in Endor was describing had taken place near sunrise, and with a maximum eclipse at 6:13 AM local Jerusalem time, January 10, 1043 BCE:

Per my Starry Night Backyard astronomy software, as seen from the Endor horizon (32° 40’ N; 35° 24’ E; 200 m elevation,) that total lunar eclipse lasted from 5:22 AM (3:35 for beginning of penumbral shadow; 4:33 for beginning of total shadow, the umbra) – 6:59 AM local solar time in Endor (sunrise being at 7:07 AM and moonset being at 7:14 AM.)

An important word study re the word ‘Endor:’

H5874

עין־דּר     עין דּור    עין־דּאר

êyn-d'ôr  êyn dôr  êyn-dôr

ane-dore', ane dore, ane-dore'

From H5869 and H1755; fountain of dwelling; Endor, a place in Palestine: - Endor.

H5869

עין

ayin

ah'-yin

Probably a primitive word; an eye (literally or figuratively); by analogy a fountain (as the eye of the landscape)

H1755

דּר    דּור

dôr  dôr

dore, dore

From H1752; properly a revolution of time, that is, an age or generation; also a dwelling

Now, please compare that with this word ‘calves’ as in “golden calves” as found in 1 Kings 12:28; 2 Kings 10:29; and 2 Chronicles 13:8:

H5695

עגל

êgel

ay'-ghel

From the same as H5696; a (male) calf (as frisking round), especially one nearly grown (that is, a steer)

H5696

עגול    עגל

âgôl  âgôl

aw-gole', aw-gole'

From an unused root meaning to revolve, circular

Last, please consider the impact of those words in the Hebrew! Or aren’t both of the above words, especially as highlighted in red font, very much words that may be applied also on a calendar, that is, the annual revolution of time around the year?!!!

Jeroboam used his powers for obscuring the appointed seasons of our Creator for meeting with His people on a regular basis, and he did so by setting up “two golden calves,” that is, a different calendar such that the people would be less inclined for frequent traveling to Jerusalem. Accordingly, Jeroboam became known as the pattern and example of an evil king.

Now, at this point I find, as it may appear at this time, that Endor, is set up for us in the Scriptures as a door of entry back into lost time and into lost time reckoning, seeing that we are indeed on the wrong side of that door, that is, on the side of the wicked witch who has been, and still is, bewitching most all of us, in our modern society, such that we’ve almost totally lost track of God’s own time reckoning and of the true Scriptural Calendar!!!

Thus, the very name ‘Endor’ should have alerted us to the fact that that event is indeed the key to the true fountain of God’s time and of our Creator’s calendar!

Praise the Lord for opening each our minds towards the darkness and blindness of each our own ignorant minds!!!

At this point in time it came to me that, what if indeed the woman in Endor was describing an eclipse, but that it was not a total, but merely a partial, eclipse? Well, here are all the partial eclipses for the same era:

Notice that out of these eleven (11) Saturday partial eclipses only three[2] were eclipsing while the sun and the moon were both yet visible together, as seemingly described by the words of the woman at Endor. Yet, this provides more options in addition to the previously described total eclipses.

Adding another piece of the puzzle defining the month of the year

Interestingly, I was shown the answer to the above dilemma even before analyzing each of these added options. That is, upon opening up my Bible at bedtime early Sabbath, Av 11, 2026, [Friday July 24, 2010,] and Sabbath morning, to these same last chapters of 1 Samuel, I rediscovered 1 Samuel 27:7, which several years ago I was also carefully considering, though unsuccessfully, with a view to finding a firm anchor point in time for a more distant Old Testament event… Well, adding these two pieces of the puzzle together, it seems such an anchor point may indeed be found!

1 Samuel 27:7 KJV  And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.

1 Samuel 27:7 TLT  And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was one summer plus four months.

You see, these words “a full year and four months…,”to the Hebrew way of thinking and per Scriptural usage, is a whole lot more specific than may at first be realized by someone steeped in Greek, Latin and modern thinking. Indeed, the plural word “ימים,”translated in KJV “a full year,” pertains to a Scriptural calendar year, that is, from one Tishri 22 unto the next Tishri 22, were the plural is used for indicating additional time beyond the cut-off of that year, that is, anything more than exactly one year! Or else, I believe more likely, the word “ימים” pertains to the “hot days” of summer, which summer season likewise ends (in the Northern hemisphere) at the end of the Scripture year. Either way, it follows that the added phrase “and four months…,” “וארבעה חדשׁים,”points to the 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th New Moons of the Scriptural year. It follows from that that the end of David’s stay in Ziklag, before his moving to Hebron (cf. 2 Samuel 2:1-3,) was reckoned past the time of the full moon, the time when the moon turned “old” (cf. 1 Samuel 28:14 and the words translated “An old man cometh up…,” that is, in reference to the full moon!,) of said 11th month. Thus, we have one more constraint that we may use for selecting between the above given options. Considering each and all of those total and partial eclipses falling on a Saturday, that is, six total eclipses and eleven partial eclipses, I find, using NASA’s Phases of the Moon tables, the following:

1.      The January 10, 1043 BCE eclipse, #4 above, would fit, provided only that David reckoned his move from Ziklag to Hebron to a point in time after the New moon of February 24, 1043 BCE and before the New Moon of March 26, 1043 BCE. Or else, if he reckoned it to a point within the month prior, that the aviv of the year prior was quite early, such that Month #1, Abib, was reckoned from March 7, 1044 BCE, which is a possible event, though quite rare, especially considering that the summer solstice at that time would have occurred about 11 days later than it does presently, i.e. about July 2 or July 3.

2.      The March 23, 1028 BCE eclipse, #6 above, might have been considered so far as timing is concerned, but it wasn’t even possibly visible from the Endor horizon.

3.      The April 2, 1075 BCE eclipse, #8 above, might be considered so far as timing is concerned, provided a) the aviv of 1076 BCE was later than March 30, 1076 BCE, and b) David reckoned his stay in Ziklag as having ended prior to the partial eclipse of April 2, 1075 BCE, that is, before the time when Ziklag was burnt down by the Amalekites (or at the very least, before the next New Moon on April 16, 1075, that is, to before a point in time within seven days of his learning of Saul’s and Jonathan’s deaths.) c) As to the eclipse event itself, however, I do not find this option consistent with the woman’s of Endor words re the sun and the moon having been seen together while at the same time there was a lunar eclipse. Considering the unlikeliness of any, much less all, of these three conditions being true, I do not find this a viable option. In addition 1075 BCE seems too far off…

4.      The February 10, 1073 BCE eclipse, #9 above, might have been considered so far as timing is concerned, but it wasn’t even possibly visible from the Endor horizon.

5.      The January 30, 1053 BCE eclipse, #11 above, might have been considered so far as timing is concerned, but it wasn’t even possibly visible from the Endor horizon.

6.      The January 31, 1026 BCE partial eclipse, #17 above, might be considered so far as timing is concerned, provided a) the aviv of 1027 BCE was ripe enough before March 29, 1027 BCE, and b) David reckoned his stay in Ziklag as having ended after the partial eclipse of January 31, 1026 BCE, that is, after the time when Ziklag was burnt down by the Amalekites, and before the next full moon on March 2, 1026 BCE, or, at the very least, before the next New Moon on March 18, 1026, that is, to before a point in time within seven days of his learning of Saul’s and Jonathan’s deaths.) c) As to the eclipse event itself, however, I do not find this option consistent with the woman’s of Endor words re the sun and the moon having been seen together while at the same time there was a lunar eclipse. Furthermore, if this option were to be true anyhow, then the woman at Endor would have had to have made a double observation in the evening, first having observed the sun and the moon being simultaneously above the horizon before sunset, and then, much later at night (between 10:15 PM and 11:15 PM,) perhaps even while being visited by Saul, again observing the actual eclipse, an eclipse that indeed wasn’t all that impressive, having no more than 43.25% of its diameter shadowed by the umbra. Although conditions a) and b) above do not seem unlikely, I do not find c) a likely possibility, most especially considering that I’ve not seen any such evening observations of the sun and the moon being seen together, being recorded on VAT 4956, the Babylonian clay tablet from Nebuchadnezzar’s 37th year of reign.

All six options having been considered, I find that only item #1, my originally perceived and accepted(?) option, remains as a likely event consistent with all constraints I’ve thus far found. Thus, I find in the words of 1 Samuel 27:7, “a full year and four months…,”a confirmation of Saul’s death having taken place on Day One of the week, Tevet (the 10th moon) 15, 1043 BCE.

And again, I do find confirmation for this line of reasoning, re the words of the woman of Endor pertaining to an eclipse, also from the very meaning inherent in the Hebrew word ‘Endor.’

[1] That is, initially, before looking into the possibility of partial eclipses… – Which triggered my discovery of an oversight re near midnight eclipses such as had different UT and Jerusalem horizon dates… though for various reasons all of those oversights turned out to be less likely candidates due to the fact that none of those added eclipses were visible while the sun and the moon were visible together. My partial eclipse investigation, however, revealed an additional 11 Saturday eclipses… out of which two, actually three though one of the three pertained only to the penumbral shadow which is essentially invisible, were eclipses visible while the sun and the moon were both visible at the same time: 1) December 10, 1052 BCE, 2) Nov 28, 1032 BCE [and 3) June 24, 1080 BCE, the one with only the penumbral shadow.]

Thus the matter became a bit more complicated. How can one be certain re which one, if any?
