A Study of the Greek Words of Textus Receptus that are Translated “Year” in KJV

Abstract:

When the word “year” is being used in the Holy Scriptures, what year is being used? How is it defined? What is the beginning and the end of the year? Or don’t we not have a need for understanding how exactly this word is being defined in the Holy Scriptures? How specifically is the word “year” being used by Paul, or by Luke, the author of Acts, in reference to the events of Paul’s life and his travels?

To take the last question first, considering the focus of our most immediate study, i.e. Paul and his travels as being central for our understanding of an accurate New Testament chronology, let’s first notice that Luke is using a key word, “ἐνιαυτός,” meaning “year1763,” only twice:

Act 11:26 KJV+  And2532 when he had found2147 him,846 he brought71 him846 unto1519 Antioch.490 And1161 it came to pass,1096 that a whole3650 year1763 they846

Act 18:11 KJV+  And5037 he continued2523 there a year1763 and2532 six1803 months,3376 teaching1321 the3588 word3056 of God2316 among1722 them.846

Is it possible to know from these passages something more than that a year – any time period being one year in length - is being referenced? May we learn when the year referenced begins and ends? May we even be able to discern something about what particular year is being referenced, especially considering Luke’s use of this word in Acts 18:11?

Considering how this Greek word, ἐνιαυτός, is being used elsewhere in the Scriptures, it appears to me that the answer may well be yes to both of these last questions. Notice (below) in particular the extensive use of this word - at least 7 out of 14 times - in connection with the day of At-One-Ment and the services of the high priest in connection therewith!

Perhaps I am getting a little ahead of myself, but let’s stop briefly and consider here what may be in this particular Greek word as used by Luke in Acts and in re to Paul’s life and actions:

What if, in both instances, reference is being given to the first year, Year One, of a specific ruler at the head of the jurisdiction under which Judea was subjugated at the time, i.e. the first years of the reign of Caesar Claudius, and of Caesar Nero, respectively? Isn’t Caesar Claudius specifically and conspicuously named - the only instances in the Scriptures that Caesar Claudius’ name is used at all - just after the first instance of this Greek word, and just before the last instance of the same Greek word as used by Luke?, i.e.:

Act 11:28  And1161 there stood up450 one1520 of1537 them846 named3686 Agabus,13 and signified4591 by1223 the3588 spirit4151 that there should3195 be1510 great3173 dearth3042 throughout1909 all3650 the3588 world:3625 which3748 (2532) came to pass1096 in the days of1909 Claudius2804 Caesar.2541

Act 18:2  And2532 found2147 a certain5100 Jew2453 named3686 Aquila,207 born1085 in Pontus,4193 lately4373 come2064 from575 Italy,2482 with2532 his848 wife1135 Priscilla; because that4252 (Claudius2804 had commanded1299 all3956 Jews2453 to depart5563 from1537 Rome:)4516 and came4334 unto them.846

Further considerations re the beginning of the year as the word “year” is being used in the Holy Scriptures and re what specifically is “the acceptable year of the Lord:”

Re G1763:ἐνιαυτός” Notice the ending “-αυτός”! Notice also the usage of this word in the NT!

The first instance of this word is found in Luk 4:19:  To preach2784 the acceptable1184 year1763 of the Lord.2962“ (KJV+) These are Yeshua’s own word. Typically the first instance of any word in the Scriptures is most specifically defined by its first instance of use. Wouldn’t this be true also for this word, especially considering the one uttering this word!?

Wouldn’t it then be pertinent then to ask for instance: How does the Lord, Yahweh Elohim, define this word? What exactly is “acceptable” to Him? Cf. “G1184 ΔεκτόςFrom G1209; approved; (figuratively) propitious”? When exactly does the year acceptable to Yahweh Elohim, the creator, begin? Consider the first instance of this word in Paul’s epistle to the Hebrews:

Heb 9:7  But1161 into1519 the3588 second1208 went the3588 high priest749 alone3441 once530 every year,1763 not3756 without5565 blood,129 which3739 he offered4374 for5228 himself,1438 and2532 for the3588 errors51 of the3588 people:2992

Notice the word just prior to Strong’s #1763, the word “once530”! What does it mean? How is it defined?

Strong’s: “G530 ἅπαξ hapax hap'-ax Probably from G537; one (or a single) time (numerically or conclusively)

Isn’t this usage, this text, also defining for us the beginning of the year?

[For those somewhat familiar with the Hebrew: Please consider the construction of this Greek word in terms of what it sounds like in Hebrew! “Ha-“ is a prefix meaning “the.” But this leaves ‘-pax,’ which word begins with ‘peh’ the Hebrew letter meaning ‘mouth’ and ‘80’ as in something new, as in the 8th day of the week being also the 1st day of the next week, i.e. “the beginning of something new.”]

And isn’t Luke’s use of this word, “once” (Hebr. 9:7,) meaning also “one” or “first,” adjacent to the word “year1763” as here considered, a confirmation also of the concept being conveyed to us in the first instance of the word “jubilee8643” in the Scriptures?

Lev 25:9 KJV+ “Then shalt thou cause the trumpet7782 of the jubilee 8643 to sound5674 on the tenth6218 day of the seventh7637 month,2320 in the day3117 of atonement3725 shall ye make the trumpet7782 sound5674 throughout all3605 your land.776

How is Strong’s #8643, “jubilee8643,” defined?

“H8643 תּרוּעה terû‛âh ter-oo-aw'  From H7321; clamor, that is, acclamation of joy or a battle cry; especially clangor of trumpets, as an alarum.

What is the root of this word?

H7321 רוּע rûa‛ roo-ah' A primitive root; to mar (especially by breaking); figuratively to split the ears (with sound), that is, shout (for alarm or joy.)

But isn’t this root very much the same, very similar in sound, indeed a close idem sonans - as the term idem sonans is defined in Black’s Law Dictionary - unto the word meaning “head” – and not tail – as in being first, in the very beginning!?

“H7218 ראשׁ rô'sh roshe From an unused root apparently meaning to shake; the head (as most easily shaken), whether literally or figuratively (in many applications, of place, time, rank, etc.)

And isn’t this word, “ראש,” the very center piece of the first word in the Scriptures “בראשׁית” encapsuled as it is within the letters meaning house, dwelling, home, i.e. “בית” !?

Or even more of an idem sonans when compared to the word meaning “an interval,” “deliverance,” “life,” “smell,” “perceive,” or even “enjoy!?”

“H7305 רוח revach reh'-vakh From H7304; room, literally (an interval) or figuratively (deliverance)

“H7306 רוּח rûach roo'-akh A primitive root; properly to blow, that is, breathe; only (literally) to smell or (by implication perceive (figuratively to anticipate, enjoy)

“H7307 רוּח rûach roo'-akh From H7306; wind; by resemblance breath, that is, a sensible (or even violent) exhalation; figuratively life, anger, unsubstantiality; by extension a region of the sky; by resemblance spirit, but only of a rational being (including its expression and functions)

So what is the beginning and end of “the acceptable year of the LORD” as those words are being used by both Isaiah and Yeshua?

Isa 61:2  To proclaim7121 the acceptable 7522 year8141 of the LORD,3068 and the day3117 of vengeance5359 of our God;430 to comfort5162 all3605 that mourn;57

Luk 4:19  To preach2784 the acceptable1184 year1763 of the Lord.2962

Isn’t it pretty clear that the beginning of the acceptable year of the Lord is the year beginning on the Day of At-One-Ment!? Isn’t it pretty clear that this is indeed defining the breaking point of the year as defined by Yahweh Elohim, the creator that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters (cf. Genesis 2:4 and Rev. 14:7.)

Gen 2:4  These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens

Gen 2:4 אלה תולדות השׁמים והארץ בהבראם ביום עשׂות יהוה אלהים ארץ ושׁמים׃

Rev 14:7  Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
