A Hebrew and Greek Word Study

‘Flesh,’ ‘Meat,’ ‘Body,’ OR

‘Bodily Abode’

Abstract and considerations:

Much teaching, much confusion, and much controversy, even to the point of war and death is based upon concepts such as “sinful flesh,” “born in sin,” “carnal nature,” “sinful nature,” etc.. (cf. the roots of Arianism: See e.g. The Formulation of the Doctrine of the Trinity - by Lynnford Beachy .doc .pdf.)

Theses concepts are largely mystical in nature, or so it seems. Could it be that the reason is as simple as a misunderstood word, even if only a slightly obscured misunderstanding of a Hebrew and/or Greek word?

Looking at the Greek word translated ‘flesh’ under Strong’s G4561 it strikes me that ‘flesh’ is a secondary meaning of a word derived from ‘stripped.’ Looking at the root of the word, i.e. G4563, I find further confirmation for my suspicion that we may be dealing with a skewed meaning of a Greek word, that is, the root means “to brush off.”

Hmmm, seems to me more like we are dealing with something superficial here, rather than with flesh as such, aren’t we?

So how does this hold up if I do a word study re the use of G4561 in the Greek NT?

At first I notice that I have several instances of G4561 in Matthew. What are the corresponding words used in Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew, the only extant available Hebrew original text of the New Testament scriptures? Will the corresponding Hebrew give me support in my above suspicion?

As it turns out the Hebrew word, H1320, is also most often translated ‘flesh.’ But, could it be that we are dealing with a similar confusion of words in both Greek and Hebrew? Yes, indeed, the primary meaning of the Hebrew word is not ‘flesh’ either, but ‘fresh, full, rosy.’

Interesting! Let me do a review of the NT usage of G4561 generally… Wow, it seems to me that a more appropriate concept being tied to that Greek word is ‘bodily abode’ or even ‘the naked body,’ as in ‘stripping,’ that is, the emphasis is not upon that which is underneath the skin, but upon that skin within one dwells as within a ‘bodily abode.’ In fact, using that last concept in terms of something exterior, like the walls of a house within which one lives, does make most of the texts using this Greek word come alive and becoming more meaningful. At least to me.

Reviewing some of the Hebrew passages of Shem Tov’s Hebrew Matthew I find confirmation for the above usage.

Thus, it seems to me that, in most instances the Greek and Hebrew word translated ‘flesh’ are probably better understood when one replaces it with the concept of ‘a naked bodily abode’ and with special emphasis upon that abode constituting nothing but the exterior shell of the being within.

It follows, for instance, importantly enough, that the concepts ‘being born in sin’ and ‘an inherently sinful carnal body’ should be replaced with the much more reasonable and fundamental Scriptural teaching re ‘sin’ as ‘missing the mark’ or ‘missing the point,’ being caused by ‘blindness’ and ‘lack of insight and understanding.’

In other words, the reason for all our errors and mistakes is due to lack of insight and lack of proper focus, “missing the point.” More…
